Mumbai's Metro Line 9, which extends from Dahisar to Mira Road, is poised to commence trial runs as the project nears the final stages of completion. The 11 km corridor, consisting of a 5 km elevated section, is intended to function as an extension of the existing Metro Line 7. Once operational, the metro line is expected to cut travel time between Colaba and Mira Road to approximately 90 minutes, offering a more efficient transit option for residents in the western suburbs.


The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has stated that around 85% of the construction work has been completed, with trial runs expected to begin shortly. The corridor is strategically designed to cover five key stations: Dahisar East, Kashigaon, Mira Bhayander, Silver Park, and Mira Road. These stations are anticipated to serve as crucial nodes, enhancing connectivity between residential, commercial, and industrial areas.

The project also includes the implementation of vital interchange points to facilitate seamless transfers between different metro lines, effectively reducing commuter travel time and congestion. According to the MMRDA, the elevated section of the corridor is in advanced stages of electrification, with power supply systems being readied for activation. Additionally, the line will be equipped with modern safety and communication systems to ensure passenger security and operational efficiency.

Authorities have indicated that the metro line will adopt the same signalling technology employed in Metro Line 7, which has been instrumental in streamlining train operations and maintaining punctuality. Furthermore, the corridor will feature advanced passenger information systems to provide real-time updates on train arrivals and departures, further enhancing commuter convenience.

The MMRDA has previously undertaken similar projects, with Metro Line 7 emerging as a successful model in reducing travel time and alleviating road congestion in Mumbai's western suburbs. The authority expects Metro Line 9 to replicate this success, contributing to the city's ongoing efforts to modernise its public transport network.

Apart from improving connectivity, the metro line is anticipated to boost property values along the corridor, especially in areas like Mira Bhayander and Kashigaon, where new commercial and residential developments are emerging. Real estate experts predict that enhanced metro connectivity will attract more investments, potentially transforming these areas into sought-after residential hubs.

With trial runs on the horizon, the MMRDA is focusing on completing pending works, including station infrastructure, power systems, and testing of rolling stock. Once the line is operational, commuters can expect a significant reduction in travel time, a decrease in road traffic, and a more sustainable mode of transport.
