The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) demolished five unapproved multi-story structures that were built inside the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) in Versova earlier this week. These structures, erected over the past year without municipal approval, posed significant environmental and safety risks. The BMC utilized heavy machinery and deployed a substantial workforce to dismantle the buildings. Furthermore, the civic body identified an additional 35 illegal constructions in the area, planning further action in the coming days.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) intensified its crackdown on illegal constructions in Mumbai's Versova area, demolishing five unauthorized high-rise buildings situated within the ecologically sensitive Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ). Despite multiple notices issued by the municipal administration instructing the removal of these structures, the concerned parties failed to comply.
The demolished buildings in Versova included Kutur House (ground plus five floors) in Tere Galli, Saishraddha Nivas (ground plus one floor) opposite Versova Pump House, Naga House (ground plus four floors) in Goma Galli, Zhemne House (ground plus three floors) in Mandvi Galli, and Ganesh Sagar (ground plus three floors) in Bazaar Galli. These structures were illegally constructed in the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) without the required permissions, leading to their demolition by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Constructed over the past year without obtaining necessary permissions, these buildings were deemed hazardous due to their location on marshy land within the CRZ. A civic official emphasized the potential threat to life posed by these structures, necessitating their demolition.
The operation involved the use of 35 hand breakers, 8 gas cutters, and 8 generators, with approximately 80 BMC officers and staff participating, supported by adequate police protection. The BMC has also identified an additional 35 unauthorized buildings within the CRZ in Versova, which are slated for demolition in the coming days as part of the ongoing enforcement drive.
