The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) has escalated its efforts to recover outstanding property tax dues from government departments. Notices have been issued to various departments, including the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA), Public Works Department, and Punjab Agricultural University, for properties where commercial activities are conducted without tax payments. MC officials are also displaying photographs of defaulting properties to encourage compliance. Last year, the MC successfully met its tax collection targets and aims to exceed them this year. If departments fail to settle their dues, the MC plans to inspect properties, calculate the tax owed, and take enforcement actions, including sealing buildings if necessary.
To collect unpaid property taxes from government agencies, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) has stepped up its efforts. Notices have been served to various departments, including the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA), Public Works Department, and Punjab Agricultural University, for properties where commercial activities are conducted without tax payments. MC officials are also displaying photographs of defaulting properties to encourage compliance.
In the past, the MC issued simple notices to departments regarding outstanding property taxes, but these often went unheeded. For instance, the police department cleared its dues after intervention from the then MC commissioner, Shena Aggarwal. However, GLADA and other departments have yet to settle their dues.
To address this, the MC has adopted a more assertive approach. Departments are given adequate time to clear their dues; if they fail to do so, MC teams will inspect the properties, calculate the tax owed, and the responsible department will be held accountable. If payment is not made, the MC plans to seal the building to enforce compliance.
The MC had previously attempted to recover dues from government departments but met with limited success. The police department cleared its dues after intervention from the then MC commissioner, Shena Aggarwal. However, GLADA and other departments have yet to settle their dues.
The MC's current strategy involves a more proactive approach, including identifying specific buildings, especially those where commercial activities take place but property taxes are not being paid. Notices are being served on the departments concerned for the recovery of the dues, and MC officials are also putting up pictures of the defaulting properties.
If departments fail to settle their dues, the MC plans to inspect the properties, calculate the tax owed, and the responsible department will be held accountable. If payment is not made, the MC plans to seal the building to enforce compliance.
By identifying specific properties, issuing targeted notices, and displaying photographs of defaulters, the MC aims to increase accountability and ensure timely tax payments. The success of these initiatives will depend on the cooperation of the concerned departments and their willingness to comply with tax obligations.
