The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) reached a major milestone in April 2025 when it collected INR 1,417 crore in property taxes, which accounted for almost 25% of its ambitious annual target of INR 5,716 crore. This marks a substantial increase from the previous year's collection of INR 670 crore in the same month. The BBMP attributes this surge to the integration of solid waste management charges with property tax payments and the extension of a 5% rebate on early payments until May 31, 2025. Despite the positive trend, approximately 3.75 lakh property owners still owe INR 836 crore in unpaid taxes, prompting the BBMP to plan stringent recovery measures post-May 31.
In a robust start to the 2025-26 financial year, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) collected INR 1,417 crore in property taxes during April 2025. This achievement represents nearly 25% of its ambitious annual target of INR 5,716 crore. The BBMP oversees approximately 22 lakh properties, with nearly 8 lakh property owners settling their dues in the first month of the fiscal year.
This collection marks a significant increase compared to the INR 670 crore collected in April 2024. Revenue officials attribute this surge to the integration of solid waste management charges with property tax payments, streamlining the payment process for property owners. Additionally, the state government extended a 5% rebate on property tax payments until May 31, 2025, further incentivizing timely payments.
Despite these positive developments, approximately 3.75 lakh property owners still owe INR 836 crore in unpaid taxes. To address this, the BBMP has announced plans to initiate stringent recovery measures, including the seizure and auction of properties, starting in June 2025. These measures aim to ensure compliance and meet the revenue targets set for the fiscal year.
Although the first reaction has been encouraging, the BBMP still has a difficult time collecting large amounts of unpaid debt. The upcoming recovery measures will be crucial in determining the success of the civic body's efforts to meet its ambitious revenue targets for the 2025-26 financial year.
