Rhenus Group, a major player in European logistics, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), which is part of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, to support multimodal cargo transportation across important national waterways. The collaboration will see Rhenus Group commencing scheduled barge operations aimed at enhancing inland waterway logistics. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the initiative as a step towards creating a greener, cost-effective, and more efficient logistics network. The first phase will involve deploying 20 barges and six pushers, targeting the transportation of over one million tonnes of cargo annually by the end of 2025.
The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the designated nodal agency for national waterways under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), has recently formalised a strategic collaboration with the European logistics giant Rhenus Group. Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding, Rhenus Group will initiate scheduled barge operations as part of its phased deployment strategy. The initial phase is set to involve the deployment of 20 barges and six pushers, with an annual target to handle more than one million tonnes of cargo by the close of 2025. The barges will operate across vital waterways, facilitating efficient cargo transportation and contributing to a sustainable logistics framework.
Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, remarked that the inland waterways offer substantial potential to establish a greener, more cost-effective logistics network. He underscored the initiative as a significant move towards integrating inland water transport with broader multimodal logistics strategies, thereby reducing carbon footprints and enhancing logistical efficiency.
As part of the agreement, additional transport solutions and scheduled barge services are also anticipated to be introduced in subsequent phases, expanding Rhenus Group's logistics network within India. The initiative aligns with the government's broader agenda to boost inland water transport as a viable alternative to conventional logistics routes, thereby fostering sustainable development in the sector.
By setting a target to move over one million tonnes of cargo annually by the end of 2025, the collaboration underlines the growing recognition of inland waterways as a vital component in India's evolving logistics ecosystem.
