The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is collaborating with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) to develop a comprehensive framework for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) zones around key metro stations. This initiative aims to transform areas like Sitabuldi into vibrant commercial, entertainment, and mixed-use hubs, promoting walkability, enhancing public transport access, and encouraging sustainable, high-density development. ADB's technical assistance includes revising TOD policies, preparing detailed project reports, and suggesting policy-level modifications. A dedicated steering committee will oversee the project, ensuring coordination among various stakeholders.
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has extended its support to the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in formulating a comprehensive framework for Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) zones around metro stations. This collaboration aims to integrate urban planning with metro infrastructure, fostering sustainable development in the city.
The project focuses on transforming identified zones around key metro stations, such as Sitabuldi, into vibrant commercial, entertainment, and mixed-use hubs. The objective is to promote walkability, enhance access to public transport, and encourage sustainable, high-density development. By aligning land use with transit corridors, the initiative seeks to create urban nodes where transportation and development are seamlessly connected.
ADB's technical assistance includes revising TOD policies to align them with local needs and integrating infrastructure development near metro corridors. The bank's consultants and technical experts will assist in drafting policy guidelines suitable for Nagpur's conditions. Additionally, ADB will help prepare detailed project reports and suggest policy-level modifications to enhance planning around transit corridors.
A dedicated steering committee and working group will be constituted to coordinate with ADB's consultants and other stakeholders. Recognizing that TOD impacts multiple domains-urban planning, transport, housing, and public utilities-the NMC plans to involve all relevant departments in the process. The initiative is expected to serve as a model for integrating metro-based transit with city development in India.
By focusing on TOD, the city aims to create integrated urban spaces that enhance the quality of life for residents. The successful implementation of this initiative could set a precedent for other cities in India, demonstrating the benefits of aligning urban development with public transportation infrastructure.
