Synopsis

Delhi airport's runway RW 28/10, which was temporarily closed for maintenance, resumed operations earlier this week. The closure, initially intended for a longer duration to upgrade the Instrument Landing System (ILS), caused disruptions due to congestion and adverse weather conditions. As a result, the maintenance work has been paused, with plans to resume in mid-June. The airport authority, Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), expressed confidence that the runway's reopening would streamline operations and improve passenger experience. The runway is expected to be closed again later this year after the peak tourist season.

Earlier this week, runway RW 28/10 at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport resumed operations, marking a significant step in alleviating air traffic congestion. The runway had been closed for maintenance, specifically to upgrade the Instrument Landing System (ILS) at one end ahead of the fog season. However, the closure, combined with easterly winds and existing congestion, impacted flight operations. In response to these challenges, the maintenance was temporarily halted, with work set to resume in mid-June.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), in an official post on X, shared that the runway was handed back to Air Traffic Control (ATC) at 8:04 am for use until mid-June. This decision is expected to ease operational pressure, offering smoother arrivals and departures for passengers, especially amid the ongoing unseasonal variations in wind conditions. The airport reiterated its commitment to passenger experience, expressing gratitude for the public's understanding and support.

The closure for ILS upgrades began on April 8, earlier this year, with the runway planned for further closure between mid-June and mid-September 2025, following the peak tourist season. DIAL assured that efforts were underway to minimise any inconvenience caused by these maintenance works. The airport, which handles approximately 1,300 daily flight movements, operates four runways and has two terminals in operation, with T2 currently undergoing maintenance.

In response to concerns over the impact of runway maintenance on flight delays and congestion, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu stated that the Ministry was closely monitoring all processes at the airport. He added that they had provided guidance to ensure better planning in the future, addressing criticisms that the maintenance schedule could have been better coordinated.

While the ILS upgrade will continue after a brief hiatus, DIAL is working closely with stakeholders to minimise disruptions. The planned future closures will be managed more efficiently, as assured by both the airport authority and the Civil Aviation Ministry. These steps reflect the airport's ongoing efforts to improve passenger experience while balancing the challenges posed by maintenance and air traffic demands.
