The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has demolished over 300 structures in Bhoomiheen Camp, Govindpuri, South Delhi, as part of a planned in-situ slum rehabilitation project. Most of the razed constructions were reportedly vacant, with the land under encroachment for the past 2.5 years. The cleared site will be used to build permanent housing for approximately 4,500 JJ (jhuggi-jhopri) dwellers from nearby Navjeevan and Jawahar Camps. This follows an earlier relocation of 1,862 eligible households from Bhoomiheen Camp to flats in Kalkaji Extension between November 2022 and May 2023, based on Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) guidelines. The initiative aligns with the Delhi government's 'Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makan' policy, which ensures alternative housing before removing informal settlements, promoting a more humane and systematic urban redevelopment approach.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) recently conducted a demolition exercise involving numerous structures in Bhoomiheen Camp in Govindpuri, located in South Delhi. During the drive, over 300 structures were razed.
The DDA has stated that the majority of these demolished constructions were vacant, and the land itself had been under encroachment for the past 2.5 years. The cleared site is specifically earmarked for an in-situ slum rehabilitation project designed to provide permanent housing solutions for approximately 4,500 jhuggi-jhopri (JJ) dwellers residing in the adjacent Navjeevan Camp and Jawahar Camp.
This initiative follows previous rehabilitation efforts for the camp's original residents. Between November 2022 and May 2023, a total of 1,862 eligible households from Bhoomiheen Camp were successfully relocated to new flats in Kalkaji Extension. Their eligibility was determined based on criteria set by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board's (DUSIB) rehabilitation policy, which considers names on voter lists from 2012-2015 and the possession of specific documents.
This strategic approach by the DDA reflects the Delhi government's overarching 'Jahan Jhuggi Wahan Makan' philosophy, which aims to provide alternative housing before undertaking the removal of informal settlements, ensuring a more humane and planned transition for affected populations.
