Larsen & Toubro (L&T) recently secured a significant contract from JSW Energy, valued between INR 1,000 crore and INR 2,500 crore, to execute the Bhavali Pumped Storage Project in Maharashtra. The project, spread across Nashik and Thane districts, is designed for a total installed capacity of 1,500 MW through multiple smaller units. The contract includes comprehensive civil engineering works such as construction of reservoirs, tunnels, approach roads, and an underground powerhouse. Pumped storage projects like Bhavali are critical for grid stability as India integrates more renewable energy sources. This order bolsters L&T's portfolio in infrastructure development and supports Maharashtra's sustainable power goals.
Infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) recently announced that it has been awarded a substantial contract by JSW Energy to execute the Bhavali Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in Maharashtra. The contract, valued between INR 1,000 crore and INR 2,500 crore, was secured by L&T's heavy civil infrastructure vertical, a division known for undertaking complex large-scale projects.
The Bhavali PSP is strategically located across the Nashik and Thane districts and is designed to deliver a total installed capacity of 1,500 MW, comprising multiple smaller generation units. The scope of work assigned to L&T includes complete execution of all civil engineering components of the project. This encompasses construction of approach roads, upper and lower reservoirs, water conductor systems, pressure tunnels, and the underground powerhouse.
Pumped storage projects such as Bhavali PSP hold significant importance in ensuring grid stability, especially as the Indian power grid increasingly incorporates variable renewable energy sources like solar and wind. These projects act as giant batteries, storing energy by pumping water to elevated reservoirs during periods of low demand and releasing it to generate electricity during peak demand, thus balancing supply fluctuations.
L&T's involvement in the Bhavali project continues its longstanding legacy in India's infrastructure and power sectors. Over the years, L&T has delivered numerous landmark projects that have significantly contributed to the country's energy security and infrastructure growth.
This new contract strengthens L&T's position as a key player in the infrastructure domain while supporting Maharashtra's vision of reliable and sustainable energy supply. The successful execution of the Bhavali PSP is expected to play a vital role in addressing the state's growing power demand while facilitating the integration of clean energy solutions.
Beyond its technical significance, the Bhavali Pumped Storage Project represents a step forward in Maharashtra's and India's broader commitment to sustainable development, clean energy adoption, and energy resilience, signalling a positive direction for the country's future power infrastructure.
