Synopsis

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated the Chenab Railway Bridge, now the world's highest railway arch bridge, towering 359 metres above the Chenab riverbed-higher than the Eiffel Tower. Spanning 1.3 km, the steel deck-arch bridge is designed to withstand extreme temperatures, high winds, and seismic forces. It forms the final link in the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), giving Kashmir its first complete rail connection to mainland India. Built at a cost of INR 1,486 crore, with a 120-year design lifespan, the bridge features 93 deck segments and a 467-metre main arch. Alongside the newly completed Anji Khad bridge, this milestone enhances connectivity and resilience in the region.

Prime Minister Shri Narenda Modi formally opened the Chenab Railway Bridge?now officially recognised as the world?s highest railway arch bridge, standing approximately 359?metres above the riverbed and surpassing the Eiffel Tower in height. Extending 1.3?km in length, this steel deck-arch bridge was engineered to resist temperatures ranging from ?10??C to 40??C, winds up to 260?km/h, and seismic forces inherent to the region?s challenging terrain

Its inauguration establishes the final link in the Udhampur?Srinagar?Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, marking Kashmir?s first-ever full railway connection to the rest of India. Alongside Chenab, the recently launched Anji Khad cable-stayed bridge enhances resilience and connectivity. Designed for an estimated lifespan of 120 years and realised at a cost of around INR?1,486 crore, the Chenab Bridge comprises 93 deck segments and a 467-metre main arch.

Indian Railways and the Konkan Railway Corporation have already begun rolling out Vande Bharat Express services between Katra and Srinagar, slicing travel time to under three hours?signifying a leap forward in regional mobility.

The inauguration of the Chenab Bridge represents more than a structural triumph?it embodies India?s strategic vision of uniting its diverse geographies through infrastructure. By blazing through Himalayan challenges and integrating high-speed rail services like the Vande Bharat, this project lays a foundation for economic growth, tourism enhancement, and deeper socio-cultural integration in Jammu & Kashmir. It stands as a testament to technological prowess and India?s unwavering commitment to inclusive national development.
