Vizianagaram district, Andhra Pradesh, faces delays in completing nearly 6,924 of 11,000 Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) homes. Despite additional government funding, many beneficiaries have not begun construction. Authorities suspect some recipients already own homes and have ordered verification visits to cancel ineligible allotments. At a recent review meeting, District Collector Dr. B.R. Ambedkar highlighted slow progress, especially in Bobbili and Vizianagaram urban areas, citing issues like water shortages and borewell theft. Officials were directed to operationalise borewells within two days and launch door-to-door awareness campaigns on available financial support. Daily construction targets and weekly progress reviews have also been mandated. Additionally, 4,096 new housing applications and 2,500 manual applications will undergo eligibility verification. The district aims to ensure timely completion of PMAY homes and deliver affordable housing to all eligible beneficiaries through focused verification and improved infrastructure.
Vizianagaram district in Andhra Pradesh is confronting a substantial housing challenge, with approximately 6,924 out of nearly 11,000 Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) homes remaining unfinished. Despite the government's allocation of additional funds to accelerate construction, many beneficiaries have not commenced building their homes. Authorities suspect that some beneficiaries may already own houses and are therefore not participating in the scheme.
District Collector Dr. B.R. Ambedkar has directed officials to conduct thorough verifications of such cases by visiting each household. He emphasized that any beneficiary found to already possess a house should have their sanctioned housing canceled.
During a review meeting at the collectorate, Dr. Ambedkar expressed concerns over the slow progress in housing completion, particularly in Bobbili and Vizianagaram urban areas. Officials attributed the delays to issues such as lack of water supply and theft of borewells. In response, the collector ordered that all borewells be made operational within two days and instructed municipal commissioners to take necessary actions.
To further expedite the process, Dr. Ambedkar has mandated door-to-door awareness campaigns to inform the public about the additional financial support available. He also directed that daily targets be set to accelerate construction work, with weekly reviews to monitor progress.
Additionally, the collector has ordered the verification of 4,096 newly submitted applications for house sites and coordination with tahsildars to verify the eligibility of 2,500 manually submitted applications. He emphasized that housing should be provided to all eligible beneficiaries and instructed officials to cross-check the list of beneficiaries sanctioned under the PM Janman schemes.
The district's proactive approach in verifying beneficiary eligibility and addressing infrastructural issues is commendable. However, sustained efforts and community engagement will be crucial to ensure that the scheme fulfills its objective of providing affordable housing to all eligible residents.
