Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) has been ranked among the top 10 hub airports in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions in ACI's Air Connectivity Ranking 2024. IGIA secured the 10th spot, with Dubai International Airport topping the list, followed by airports in Shanghai, Doha, Seoul, Guangzhou, Beijing, Bangkok, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur. The report noted a 14% year-on-year rise in air connectivity, driven by increased international travel and strong airline network recovery. IGIA, operated by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), now connects to 153 destinations-81 domestic and 72 international. The Hub Connectivity Index evaluates transfer efficiency and onward connectivity. The airport's growing network supports the Indian government's goal to position IGIA as a key global transit hub. This ranking highlights Delhi's expanding role in international aviation and its rising prominence in the global connectivity landscape.
According to the Airports Council International (ACI) Asia-Pacific & Middle East's Air Connectivity Ranking 2024, which was announced earlier this week, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is one of the top 10 hub airports in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions. The report highlighted a 14% increase in air connectivity across both regions on a year-on-year basis, attributed to strong international travel demand, the reopening of major travel corridors, and robust recovery of airline networks.
According to the latest release, IGIA holds the tenth position in the list of leading hub airports in terms of connectivity for the year 2024. Topping the list is Dubai International Airport, followed by Shanghai Pudong International Airport in China. Hamad International Airport in Qatar and South Korea's Incheon International Airport secured the third and fourth spots, respectively.
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Beijing Capital International Airport, both in China, ranked fifth and sixth. Completing the list were Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport at seventh, Singapore Changi Airport at eighth, and Kuala Lumpur International Airport-based in Malaysia-at the ninth position. Notably, the original source mistakenly associated Kuala Lumpur with Indonesia instead of Malaysia.
The Hub Connectivity Index, as outlined in the report, evaluates an airport's effectiveness as an international transfer hub. This includes assessing transfer windows, deviation from direct routes, and the extent of onward connectivity available to passengers.
IGIA, managed by Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), currently offers connections to 153 destinations, comprising 81 domestic and 72 international routes. DIAL noted that this expanded network aligns with the Indian government's strategy to position the airport as a prominent global transit hub, further strengthening India's standing in the global aviation landscape.
With a steadily expanding network and strategic efforts by DIAL and the government to establish IGIA as a key international gateway, Delhi is reinforcing its role in the global connectivity ecosystem. The ranking not only reflects infrastructural and operational progress but also signals rising international confidence in India's aviation capabilities.
