State-run NHPC is preparing to initiate the commissioning of three out of eight generating units of its flagship Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, each with a capacity of 250 MW, starting next month. This move is subject to receiving approval from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA). The remaining five units are planned for phased commissioning by mid-2026. Located on the Subansiri River along the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam border, the 2,000 MW mega project is expected to produce over 7,421 million units annually in a 90 per cent dependable year. Once operational, the project will mark a major milestone in India's renewable energy expansion.
NHPC Limited, the state-owned hydropower giant under the Ministry of Power, is gearing up to begin the commissioning process for three of its generating units each rated at 250 MW at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project from next month. This development was disclosed by the company in a regulatory filing made earlier this week.
The company noted that it is currently awaiting mandatory clearance from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) to proceed. NHPC stated that the commissioning process for these initial three units is expected to commence from June 2025, provided the NDSA's approval is secured in time.
In the same communication, NHPC further informed that the remaining five generating units-each also with a 250 MW capacity-are projected to be brought online by May 2026 in a phased manner. This timeline aligns with the project's final stages of construction and regulatory compliance.
The Subansiri Lower project, with a total installed capacity of 2,000 MW, stands as India's largest hydroelectric venture to date. It is a run-of-the-river project that also features a water storage component and is strategically located near North Lakhimpur, straddling the border between Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. Its design capitalises on the potential of the Subansiri River, a major tributary of the Brahmaputra.
The project site is accessible through Nagaon, which serves as the nearest railhead, while air connectivity is available via Lilabari and Dibrugarh airports. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate an estimated 7,421.59 million units (MU) of electricity annually, based on a 90 per cent reliable year-making it a significant contributor to the national grid.
The Subansiri Lower project has long been viewed as a crucial addition to India's renewable energy infrastructure. Although the construction process has faced numerous delays over the years due to environmental, regulatory, and social concerns, the recent progress signals a strong push towards its completion.
With three units on the verge of commissioning and the rest set to follow in the coming year, the project is on track to deliver long-awaited benefits in terms of power generation, regional connectivity, and environmental impact. As NHPC awaits the final nod from the NDSA, the project edges closer to realising its role as a cornerstone of India's green energy future.
