Synopsis

Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, the Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power, announced that the central government will assess the updated Namma Metro Phase-2 cost proposal after the Karnataka state cabinet gives its approval. This is a major step forward for Bengaluru's urban infrastructure. Additionally, the Centre is reviewing the Phase-3A proposal, a 37 km extension estimated at INR 28,400 crore. This move aligns with the broader objective of enhancing urban mobility and addressing the city's escalating traffic challenges. The minister also emphasized the importance of legacy waste management and advocated for higher Floor Area Ratios (FAR) along mass transit corridors to optimize urban development.

Union Minister Shri Manohar Lal Khattar recently advised the Karnataka government to approve the updated cost proposal for the Namma Metro Phase 2, a crucial step in advancing the city's metro infrastructure.

He also highlighted the submission of the Phase-3A proposal by the state government, detailing a 37 km extension with an estimated cost of INR 28,400 crore. This proposal is currently under review by an expert agency, with the Centre having issued directives to expedite the examination process. The final sanctioning of the project by the central government awaits the state's response.

In his address, Khattar urged the Karnataka government to prioritize legacy waste management and to leverage the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SSASCI) 2025-26 for urban reforms. He advocated for the implementation of higher Floor Area Ratios (FAR) along mass transit corridors, suggesting that such measures would reshape urban landscapes, alleviate traffic congestion, and enhance public transport utilization.

This announcement follows the Centre's recent sanctioning of a 45 km segment of the metro Phase-3 network, costing INR 15,600 crore. The ongoing and proposed expansions underscore a concerted effort to bolster Bengaluru's urban mobility and infrastructure resilience.

By addressing infrastructural bottlenecks and advocating for sustainable urban planning practices, such as enhanced FAR along transit corridors, the government aims to transform Bengaluru into a model metropolis with efficient public transportation and improved quality of life for its residents. The collaboration between state and central authorities in these initiatives reflects a shared commitment to fostering sustainable and inclusive urban growth.
