Gwalior is undergoing a INR 30,000 crore infrastructure overhaul to boost connectivity, trade, and urban living. Key projects include the INR 4,262rore Agra-Gwalior Greenfield Highway and the INR 23,700 crore Atal Progress-Way (Chambal Expressway), both enhancing links with Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. A redeveloped Gwalior railway station and expanded airport terminal will improve passenger capacity. The Smart Cities Mission is digitizing services and upgrading civic infrastructure, while the new 50,000-seat Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium is set to host international events. Gwalior, renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage, is embracing a new era of development through a series of ambitious infrastructure projects. One of the most significant undertakings is the Agra-Gwalior Greenfield Highway, awarded to G R Infraprojects. Valued at INR 4,262.78 crore, this six-lane, access-controlled highway will connect Deori in Agra to Susera in Gwalior, enhancing connectivity across Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. The project also includes upgrades to the existing NH-44, aiming to improve road safety and reduce travel time.
Complementing this is the Western Bypass project, a 28.5-kilometer, four-lane access-controlled road approved at a cost of INR 1,347.6 crore. This bypass is designed to alleviate traffic congestion in Gwalior's western regions and improve connectivity to the Chambal area.
The Atal Progress-Way, also known as the Chambal Expressway, is another transformative project. With an estimated cost of INR 23,700 crore, this 404-kilometer, six-lane expressway will link Kota in Rajasthan to Etawah in Uttar Pradesh, passing through Gwalior. As part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, it aims to boost economic development in the Chambal and Gwalior regions by improving trade routes and reducing travel time.
In the realm of rail transport, Gwalior Junction railway station is set for a major redevelopment under the Indian Railway Stations Development Corporation Ltd (IRSDC). With an investment of approximately INR 290 crore, the project will modernize the station with enhanced passenger amenities while preserving its heritage architecture.
The city's air connectivity is also receiving a boost with the ongoing development of a new terminal at Gwalior Airport. This project aims to increase passenger capacity and improve facilities, positioning Gwalior as a more accessible destination for travelers and businesses alike.
Under the Smart Cities Mission, Gwalior is implementing various projects to enhance urban living. These include smart street lighting, e-governance platforms, and intelligent traffic management systems. The mission focuses on sustainable development, efficient public services, and improved quality of life for residents.
Additionally, the city is investing in public amenities such as the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium, which opened in June 2024. With a seating capacity of up to 50,000, the stadium is equipped with modern facilities, including floodlights, practice grounds, and corporate boxes, aiming to host national and international sporting events.
These comprehensive infrastructure developments are poised to transform Gwalior into a modern urban center, fostering economic growth, enhancing connectivity, and improving the overall quality of life for its residents.
