Mumbai is set to host the GS1 General Assembly 2025 from 20th to 22nd May 2025, marking a significant event for the global supply chain community. GS1 India will welcome over 250 guests, including members of the GS1 Management Board, Chairpersons, and CEOs representing 118 member organisations from across the globe. The event will focus on the theme 'Building Bridges for a Better Tomorrow,' with discussions centred around how global standards and emerging technologies are transforming supply chains.
One of the key highlights of the event will be the official endorsement of GS1 Vision 2030, the organisation's newly outlined strategic direction aimed at promoting data accuracy, real-time data sharing, and trusted information exchange within supply chains. Renaud de Barbuat, President and CEO of GS1, stated that the approval of GS1 Vision 2030 represents a pivotal moment for the global GS1 community. He emphasised that in a world increasingly driven by digitalisation and AI, GS1's mission is to support companies in reaching markets effectively while enhancing supply chain efficiency, resilience, and regulatory compliance.
S. Swaminathan, CEO of GS1 India, expressed that hosting the General Assembly in India underscores the nation's growing influence in global trade. He noted that as supply chains continue to evolve towards greater transparency and digitalisation, this year's theme reflects a collective commitment to fostering collaboration and transformation through global standards. Swaminathan also mentioned that the event will include insights from leaders in Indian industries such as retail, healthcare, technology, supply chain management, and e-commerce, who will discuss how standards and emerging technologies are enabling smarter, more resilient supply chains.
Key discussion points during the assembly will include the introduction of Vision 2030 and its anticipated impact on global industries, the Ambition 2027 initiative focused on next-generation barcodes, and the transformative influence of emerging technologies such as AI and Blockchain.
GS1, a neutral, not-for-profit organisation, is widely recognised for its barcodes, hailed as one of the '50 things that made the world economy' by the BBC. The organisation's standards facilitate seamless data sharing across 25 sectors and 118 countries, supporting over 2 million companies and managing approximately 10 billion transactions daily. GS1 India's role as a member organisation established by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India, along with key trade bodies, reinforces the importance of global standards in modernising supply chains and fostering economic growth.
As the world shifts towards next-generation barcodes and AI-driven supply chains, the event serves as a critical moment for stakeholders to align on global standards that will shape the future of commerce and logistics. By fostering collaboration across sectors and geographies, GS1 aims to establish a more connected and resilient global supply chain ecosystem.
