The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has increased fines for unauthorized constructions in order to discourage violations of building rules. Builders and owners found guilty of such violations will face higher fines, and the recent demolition of unauthorized buildings has served as a deterrent. While severe violations will not be eligible for regularization, minor modifications may be allowed upon payment of a nominal amount. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has taken a strong stance against violations of the city's building rules by implementing higher fines for developers and property owners. The primary objective behind this decision, according to civic officials, is to discourage unauthorized constructions and ensure compliance with regulations.
A spokesperson from the KMC buildings department stated that the proposal to impose a regularization fine higher than the registration price of a property has been approved. Consequently, the civic body has initiated the process of imposing these increased fines on builders or owners who are found guilty of unauthorized constructions. This move signifies the KMC's commitment to curbing illegal building activities within the city.
Additionally, an official highlighted the correlation between the substantial fines and the recent demolition of unauthorized buildings, suggesting that this combination has acted as a deterrent to some extent. By adopting a stringent approach, the KMC intends to discourage builders and property owners from violating building regulations and rules.
Moreover, the official emphasized that buildings constructed in blatant violation of the rules would not be eligible for regularization. However, there might be certain exceptional cases where regularization could be considered, subject to clearance from a designated hearing officer. This approach ensures that severe violations are not overlooked, while also allowing for flexibility in certain unique circumstances.
In terms of making minor alterations or additions to existing structures, such as carving out space from a sanctioned plan or adding facilities like a toilet, the KMC has adopted a more lenient approach. A KMC official stated that individuals seeking such modifications would be granted approval after paying a nominal amount.
