Synopsis

Mumbai's railway infrastructure is undergoing a major transformation with 36 stations being redeveloped under the Union Railway Ministry's Amrit Bharat Mission. Key hubs like CSMT, Byculla, Malad, and Jogeshwari will see significant upgrades, including elevated entries, modern platforms, CCTV coverage, and commercial zones. The INR 1,813 crore revamp of CSMT leads the initiative, aiming to turn it into a world-class multimodal hub. With most works expected to be completed by 2026, the plan targets smoother passenger movement, improved interconnectivity, and enhanced real estate opportunities. Overall, the project is part of a larger push to modernise 132 stations across Maharashtra.

Mumbai is set to get a major railway infrastructure upgrade with 36 stations across the city being redeveloped under the Union Railway Ministry's Amrit Bharat Mission. The initiative, which covers 132 stations in Maharashtra, aims to ease congestion, improve access, and offer better passenger amenities across key railway hubs.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the progress of the revamp, which is focused on turning suburban and mainline stations into modern transport hubs. In Mumbai, stations such as Byculla, CSMT, Lower Parel, Jogeshwari, Chinchpokli, and Malad are among those being transformed with upgraded buildings, better platforms, and modern amenities. Many stations are currently between 5% and 40% complete.

The redevelopment includes features like parking lots, elevated access points, dedicated pick-up and drop zones, improved signage, advanced lighting systems, and water harvesting facilities. Stations will also have enhanced CCTV surveillance, improved escalators and lifts, and platform extension to handle increasing footfalls. However, construction work has been slower at a few stations like Lower Parel, Marine Lines, and Charni Road due to space and traffic challenges.

The total investment in this project is substantial. For example, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) alone is undergoing a INR 1,813 crore redevelopment and is expected to become a world-class multimodal hub. Other major stations being upgraded include:

  • Jogeshwari - INR 119 crore

  • Chinchpokli - INR 52 crore

  • Byculla - INR 135.5 crore

  • Lower Parel - INR 19.4 crore

  • Sandhurst Road - INR 16.4 crore

  • Malad - INR 212.3 crore

  • Vikhroli - INR 233 crore

The plan aims to offer better interconnectivity and smoother passenger movement between suburban and long-distance train systems. Some of these stations will also include commercial areas, opening up new real estate and retail opportunities.

The Amrit Bharat scheme is part of the central government's effort to modernise Indian Railways through phased and sustained investment in urban centres like Mumbai, where railway networks form the backbone of daily commuting. According to officials, the full redevelopment will be completed in phases over the next few years, with most station works expected to be completed by 2026.

With INR 1000s of crores invested, Mumbai's station upgrades are not just about aesthetics-they're designed to handle the city's fast-growing population and transit needs while creating modern spaces that blend travel, connectivity, and real estate.
