Margao, South Goa's commercial and cultural capital, is undergoing a INR 1,679 crore infrastructure revamp. The 11-km Margao Western Bypass, now complete at INR 482 crore, features a 1.2-km elevated viaduct to protect River Sal's floodplains. A INR 747 crore NH-66 flyover project will connect the bypass to Cuncolim, easing traffic congestion. A INR 450 crore 500-bed district hospital is underway to improve public healthcare, while a multi-level car park and Smart City-funded urban renewal initiatives are set to upgrade civic infrastructure. These projects aim to transform Margao into a modern, accessible city while safeguarding its environmental and cultural identity.
Margao, the cultural and commercial hub of South Goa, is undergoing significant infrastructural transformations aimed at enhancing connectivity, urban development, and public amenities.
A pivotal project is the completion of the 11-kilometer Margao Western Bypass, designed to decongest city traffic by providing an alternative route from Navelim to Verna on National Highway 66. Initiated over five years ago, the project faced delays due to environmental concerns, particularly in the floodplains of the River Sal. To address these, a 1.2-kilometer viaduct was constructed on stilts, ensuring minimal ecological disruption. The project's cost escalated to INR 482 crore due to these modifications. The bypass includes three vehicular underpasses and service roads to facilitate smooth traffic flow.
To further improve regional connectivity, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has sanctioned INR 747 crore for the four-laning of a 7.24-kilometer stretch of NH-66 from the end of the Margao bypass to Cuncolim. This project, approved under the Hybrid Annuity Model, includes the construction of a 4.45-kilometer six-lane flyover aimed at reducing urban congestion and enhancing road safety.
The Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC) is overseeing the construction of a 500-bed district hospital in Margao. With an estimated investment of INR 450 crore, this state-of-the-art facility aims to provide advanced medical care to residents, reducing the burden on existing healthcare institutions and improving public health infrastructure in the region.
Addressing the city's parking challenges, the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) has taken over the multi-level car parking project in Margao. This facility is expected to alleviate parking woes in the bustling commercial areas, ensuring better traffic management and convenience for shoppers and business owners alike.
Under the Smart City Mission, Margao is set to witness several urban renewal projects. These include the restoration of the Margao Municipal Council building and the rejuvenation of major town areas. The Goa Budget 2025-26 has allocated funds for these initiatives, emphasizing the state's commitment to sustainable urban development.
Collectively, these projects signify Margao's commitment to sustainable development, aiming to enhance the quality of life for its residents while preserving its rich cultural heritage.
