Synopsis

Korba, dubbed India's 'Power Capital,' is undergoing a transformation with major infrastructure and energy projects. A cutting-edge 800 MW AUSC power plant by NTPC-BHEL is set to enhance efficiency and lower emissions. The Kusmunda coal expansion, costing USD 957 million (INR 7,958 crore), will raise output to 50 MTPA by 2025. The aluminum park revival, INR 200 crore in civic upgrades, and integration with the Nagpur industrial corridor are poised to boost industrial and urban growth. With these projects, including roads, underbridges, and sports facilities, Korba is positioning itself as a model for sustainable, integrated industrial development in India.

Korba, often dubbed the "Power Capital of India," is undergoing a significant transformation with a series of infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing its energy capacity, industrial growth, and urban development. These initiatives are set to redefine the city's economic landscape and position it as a model for sustainable industrial advancement.?

A landmark project is the establishment of an 800 MW high-tech power plant employing Advanced Ultra-Supercritical (AUSC) technology. This initiative, a collaboration between NTPC and BHEL under the joint venture NTPC-BHEL Power Projects Pvt Ltd (NBPPL), represents a significant step toward enhancing India's thermal power capacity while incorporating environmentally friendly technologies. The AUSC technology is expected to achieve up to 50% thermal efficiency, reducing coal consumption and emissions, thereby aligning with India's climate goals.

The Korba South Thermal Power Project, proposed near the villages of Risdi and Risda, was initially planned to consist of two 500 MW coal-fired units. However, as of December 2017, the project had not received environmental clearance, and plans appear to have been abandoned.

In the coal sector, the Kusmunda Open Cast (OC) Expansion project aims to increase production capacity from 15 to 50 million tonnes per year. With a projected cost of approximately USD 957 million, the project is expected to be completed by March 2025. This expansion will bolster coal availability for power generation and industrial use, reinforcing Korba's status as a key energy hub.

The Chhattisgarh government has decided to revive the aluminum park project in Korba, with an initial budget allocation of INR 5 crore for the financial year 2024-25. The park aims to facilitate the manufacturing of aluminum products locally, leveraging the production capabilities of BALCO, which plans to enhance its capacity to 1 million tonnes per annum. This initiative is expected to attract significant investment and generate employment opportunities in the region.

To enhance economic growth, the Chhattisgarh government plans to connect the Korba-Bilaspur-Raipur stretch with the proposed Nagpur industrial corridor. This integration aims to boost industrial activities, create employment opportunities, and position Chhattisgarh prominently on the national industrial map.

Under the guidance of Commerce and Industries Minister Shri Lakhan Lal Dewangan, Korba has received approval for over INR 200 crore in construction and development projects. These include the construction of new roads, underbridges, an indoor stadium, and a swimming pool. Additionally, more than INR 50 crore has been allocated for road construction, cement concrete roads, and drainage projects under various schemes, aiming to improve urban infrastructure and quality of life for residents.

Collectively, these projects signify a comprehensive approach to Korba's development, balancing industrial expansion with environmental sustainability and urban improvement. As these initiatives progress, Korba is poised to emerge as a model city for integrated and sustainable development in India.
