Rajkot is emerging as a modern urban hub through a series of transformative infrastructure projects. The INR 2,100 crore Smart City Masterplan spans 930 acres, aiming to develop walkable, sustainable localities. The 41.11 km Rajkot Metro Rail Project is set to reduce congestion and ensure multimodal connectivity. Enhancing intercity travel, 193 km of the INR 3,350 crore Ahmedabad-Rajkot highway expansion has been completed. The Rajkot International Airport, inaugurated in July 2023, can now handle wide-body aircraft. Meanwhile, RUDA is executing INR 174.83 crore worth of urban development projects, reinforcing Rajkot's growth as a sustainable, connected, and economically vibrant city.
Rajkot, a prominent city in Gujarat, is experiencing significant infrastructural development aimed at enhancing urban living, boosting economic growth, and preserving its rich heritage. Building upon previous developments, here are additional initiatives shaping Rajkot's future:
Under the Smart Cities Mission, Rajkot is developing a Green Field Area covering approximately 930 acres with an estimated project cost of INR 2,100 crore. The project envisions world-class, smart physical infrastructure with environment-friendly, sustainable, and technology-driven utilities. The design emphasizes developing walkable localities and promoting a multi-modal transport network.
The Rajkot Metro Rail Project is a greenfield urban transport initiative aimed at reducing congestion and providing a sustainable mode of transport. Spanning 41.11 km, the project integrates with existing urban infrastructure, ensuring multimodal connectivity with regional rail, city bus services, and intermediate public transport, such as autos and cycle rickshaws.
The Ahmedabad-Rajkot Highway is undergoing a six-laning expansion to enhance traffic flow and safety. As of December 2024, 193 kilometres of the 197-kilometre stretch in the first phase have been completed. The remaining work is slated for completion by December 2025. This INR 3,350 crore project is expected to reduce travel time between Ahmedabad and Rajkot by approximately 30 to 45 minutes and lower vehicle fuel consumption by 10 to 15 percent.
Inaugurated on July 27, 2023, the Rajkot International Airport at Hirasar is Gujarat's first greenfield airport. The airport features a 3,040-meter runway capable of handling wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747. The terminal is designed to accommodate up to 1,800 passengers during peak hours and includes modern amenities such as four aerobridges, 20 check-in counters, and advanced firefighting systems.
The Rajkot Urban Development Authority (RUDA) has initiated several infrastructure projects worth INR 174.83 crore. Key initiatives include the construction of Ring Road-2, Phase-2, from Kankot Road to Korat Chowk, and the development of 45.0-meter DP Roads connecting various parts of the city. Additionally, underground drainage projects are underway in Ronki and Kangashiyali villages.
These initiatives underscore Rajkot's commitment to sustainable development, economic growth, and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens, positioning the city as a model for urban transformation in India.
