Lego has officially launched a USD 1 billion manufacturing facility in Vietnam's Binh Duong province as part of its strategic push to strengthen its footprint in the Asia-Pacific region. The new plant, Lego's first carbon-neutral factory and sixth globally, is expected to support rising demand from fast-growing Asian markets like India, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, and Australia. With plans to run the factory entirely on renewable energy by early 2026 and a target of net-zero emissions by 2050, the company is aligning its expansion with sustainability goals. The move is also expected to generate over 4,000 local jobs.
In a bold move to capitalise on Asia's growing consumer base, Lego inaugurated a USD 1 billion factory in Vietnam earlier this week. Located in the southern province of Binh Duong, this facility marks a significant milestone in the Danish toymaker's global expansion strategy, being its second production site in Asia after China and sixth worldwide. The factory spans over 44 hectares and was built to support the rising demand in markets across Asia-Pacific, including India, Vietnam, Japan, South Korea, and Australia. Executives noted that the region is becoming increasingly important for Lego's long-term growth, as sales in Asia have outpaced other regions in recent years. In line with this, the company announced that over 4,000 jobs would be created as operations scale up.
Lego Group CEO Niels B. Christiansen mentioned that Vietnam was chosen due to its proximity to key markets and a highly skilled workforce. He highlighted that the new factory is not only a response to demand but also a way to reduce delivery times and environmental impact. Christiansen added that the facility reflects Lego's long-term vision of operating closer to its consumers while maintaining sustainable production practices.
What makes this new plant stand out is its sustainability commitment. The company has partnered with Vietnam Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) to install solar panels both on-site and through off-site farms. These efforts are part of Lego's broader plan to power the facility entirely with renewable energy by early 2026. The Vietnam factory is the first of its kind for the company, built to meet carbon-neutral standards from day one.
This eco-conscious approach fits within Lego's global sustainability target of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050. As part of this agenda, Lego has already been investing heavily in greener supply chains, switching to plant-based or recycled materials, and minimising plastic waste in packaging.
Vietnam's government has welcomed the project as a significant step in attracting high-quality, environmentally responsible foreign investment. Local authorities praised the project for bringing not just jobs but also technology transfer and higher environmental standards into the country's manufacturing ecosystem.
This expansion also aligns with Lego's earlier decision to ramp up direct-to-consumer operations across Asia. The company has opened several branded retail stores in key Indian and Southeast Asian cities, indicating a long-term play in developing brand affinity and market share across the continent.
Lego is laying the groundwork for future scalability while addressing environmental priorities. This project reaffirms Vietnam's rising stature as a manufacturing hub and could serve as a blueprint for other global companies aiming to merge expansion with sustainability in Asia.
