Synopsis

Trichy Corporation has announced a 5% waiver on current property tax dues for the financial year 2025-2026 if paid by April 30, with a maximum incentive limit of INR 5,000. The scheme, enabled under Section 84(1) of the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998, aims to boost timely tax collection from the city's 2.4 lakh property assessments. The civic body generates INR 137 crore annually, but struggles with INR 50 crore in arrears. Officials hope to replicate last year's 32% increase in early collections, allowing focus on recovering long-standing dues. Timely payment is strongly encouraged to avail the incentive.

The Trichy City Corporation has introduced an incentive scheme to encourage residents to pay their current property tax dues for the 2025-2026 financial year by 30th April. Under the scheme, property owners who settle their dues within this deadline will be eligible for a 5% waiver on the total tax amount, with the maximum rebate capped at INR 5,000.

This initiative, facilitated under Section 84(1) of the Tamil Nadu Urban Local Bodies Act, 1998, is part of the civic body's effort to improve early tax collection and reduce reliance on recovering delayed payments. Trichy currently has around 2.4 lakh property tax assessments and earns roughly INR 137 crore in property tax revenue annually. However, it also faces the persistent challenge of approximately INR 50 crore in arrears each year.

The incentive scheme is designed to promote timely compliance by rewarding prompt taxpayers. A senior official from the corporation noted that a similar scheme introduced in 2023 saw a 32% spike in tax payments during the first month of the financial year. "We hope to see a similar outcome this time. Early payment would enable us to shift our focus towards addressing long-pending property tax arrears," the official stated.

The incentive applies strictly to the current tax demand for the ongoing fiscal period, from April 2025 to March 2026. It does not apply to any outstanding dues from previous years. By offering a 5% reduction in dues as a direct financial benefit, the corporation aims to motivate property owners to clear their obligations early and avoid contributing to the mounting arrears.

The civic administration believes this timely inflow of revenue will also help improve urban infrastructure and municipal services, as it provides immediate access to funds necessary for civic planning and development. The move is expected to not only enhance tax compliance but also ease the administrative burden of pursuing delinquent payers later in the year.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the scheme by paying through online portals or designated collection centres. Officials have also assured that awareness campaigns will be launched to inform property owners about the benefits and deadlines of the scheme. The corporation views this initiative as a win-win approach to municipal revenue collection.
