The Jharkhand government has announced the development of new townships in Ranchi, Khunti, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Dhanbad, Hazaribag, and Deoghar to address the urban housing shortages and promote planned urbanisation. Each township will span 400-500 acres and include housing colonies, schools, institutions, green areas, and commercial spaces. Unlike the premium Ranchi Smart City, this initiative will focus on affordability. The Department of Urban Development has initiated land acquisition, starting with Ranchi. Coordination with district administrations is ongoing to identify the unencumbered land. Ranchi DC confirmed efforts to locate government and unused land, possibly conducting anti-encroachment drives to facilitate the project.
In a significant move to address urban housing challenges and promote structured urban growth, the Jharkhand government has unveiled plans to establish new townships across eight major cities Ranchi, Khunti, Jamshedpur, Bokaro, Ramgarh, Dhanbad, Hazaribag, and Deoghar. This ambitious project, being spearheaded by the Department of Urban Development and Housing, seeks to develop these areas along the lines of smart cities while keeping affordability and accessibility at its core. Each of the proposed townships will encompass approximately 400 to 500 acres, with the objective of offering integrated urban living spaces. These will feature not only residential colonies but also essential public amenities such as educational institutions, commercial complexes, green zones, and other infrastructural elements necessary for sustainable urban development.
Unlike the Ranchi Smart City initiative, which focuses on premium infrastructure, this new undertaking aims to cater to the broader population by providing cost-effective housing solutions. The plan is designed to ensure inclusivity in urban expansion while maintaining a high standard of urban planning. The state government hopes this will encourage balanced population distribution and alleviate pressure on existing city infrastructures.
Currently, Ranchi is the first district to be actively engaged in the process. Rakesh Kumar, General Manager of the Ranchi Smart City project, mentioned that the Ranchi Deputy Commissioner has been formally approached to identify potential land parcels. This approach is part of a phased execution strategy, which will initially focus on Ranchi as a template before expanding the model to other cities. The administration is placing particular emphasis on acquiring unencumbered plots that can be swiftly processed for development without legal or logistical obstacles.
This initiative marks a pivotal shift towards inclusive, affordable, and well-planned urbanisation in Jharkhand.
