Synopsis

India and Nepal have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at enhancing cooperation in the agriculture sector, with a focus on crop productivity, post-harvest management, and sustainable practices. The agreement, signed by Indian Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Nepal's Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development Ram Nath Adhikari, covers diverse areas including agri-tech, trade, horticulture, micro-irrigation, and integrated farming systems. During his visit, Chouhan also met Nepal's Prime Minister and discussed the importance of collaborative efforts in modernising agriculture, ensuring food security, and advancing shared development goals.

Earlier this week, India and Nepal formalised a fresh phase of agricultural cooperation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that aims to strengthen their collaborative efforts in the farming sector. The agreement was signed in Kathmandu by India's Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and Nepal's Minister for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Ram Nath Adhikari.

Chouhan shared on social media that the agreement is geared towards improving crop yields, enhancing post-harvest processes, upgrading agri-marketing systems, and encouraging climate-resilient, sustainable farming. He noted that this development would significantly deepen bilateral ties between the two countries.

According to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Nepal, the scope of the agreement spans agricultural science and technology, crop and agricultural production, trade and marketing, horticulture, plant protection, micro-irrigation, integrated farming systems, and improved market access.

Both ministers also took the opportunity to assess the progress of various ongoing joint agricultural initiatives and discussed new areas for potential collaboration. These discussions reflect a broader push to align their agricultural strategies and leverage each other's expertise for mutual benefit.

Following the MoU signing, Chouhan met Nepal's Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli at his official residence, where he conveyed greetings from India's leadership. The two leaders engaged in a dialogue about the historic and cultural foundations of Indo-Nepal relations and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening people-to-people ties.

During the conversation, Chouhan stressed the importance of bilateral efforts in modernising agriculture, bolstering food security, and driving economic growth. The Prime Minister's Office noted that the meeting reinforced the need for joint action in areas critical to both nations' development.

Chouhan, who was in Nepal to attend the 3rd BIMSTEC Agriculture Ministerial Meeting, remarked that the conference had become a significant platform in the global movement for food security, agricultural advancement, and farmer empowerment. He also highlighted the extensive discussions around expanding bilateral agricultural cooperation, tackling shared challenges, and collectively progressing towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The emphasis on sustainable practices, technology integration, and improved market access highlights a forward-looking approach that resonates with global priorities like food security and climate adaptation. As they move ahead with this partnership, India and Nepal are also reinforcing a long-standing relationship built on mutual respect and regional solidarity.
