Synopsis

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety has begun inspecting the 6-km BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk stretch of Mumbai Metro Line 3, marking the final step before commercial launch. This section, with six key stations including Dadar and Worli, is part of the 20-km Phase I corridor from Aarey to Acharya Atre Chowk. Safety checks cover structures, tracks, electrical systems, fire safety, and tunnel ventilation-including a complex tunnel under the Mithi River. Trial runs have been completed, but the launch date is yet to be announced. Once operational, the line will ease road traffic, boost connectivity in central Mumbai, and offer fares ranging from INR 10 to INR 60.

The Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) recently began inspection of the 6-km stretch between Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) and Acharya Atre Chowk for Mumbai Metro Line 3. The section includes six stations: Dharavi, Sitladevi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, Worli, and Acharya Atre Chowk.

This inspection is the final step before commissioning the corridor for commercial operations. Once approved, Metro trains will run from Aarey to Acharya Atre Chowk, covering nearly 20 km. The remaining 12.5-km segment between Acharya Atre Chowk and Cuffe Parade is still under development and is expected to become operational in the coming months.

CMRS is inspecting key systems including civil structures, track alignment, and electrical supply for safety and reliability. Checks also cover fire safety, tunnel ventilation, emergency evacuation protocols, and station facilities like lighting and escalators. Signalling and communication systems are being evaluated to ensure smooth train operations and compliance with safety standards across the underground stretch.

This stretch also includes one of the corridor's most technically challenging engineering feats: tunnelling under the Mithi River. The work was executed using specially modified Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) adapted for underwater operations.

Before the CMRS inspection, trial runs at operational speed and system integration checks had been completed. While all statutory permissions are reportedly in place, officials from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) have not disclosed a specific launch date.

Once operational, this new segment will connect major residential and commercial hubs such as Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, and Worli, potentially reducing heavy road traffic across central Mumbai. The minimum fare on this corridor has been set at INR 10, while the maximum fare in Phase I from Aarey to BKC is INR 40. With the line's extension to Acharya Atre Chowk, Siddhivinayak, and Worli, the maximum fare will rise to INR 60.

As the Aqua Line edges closer to full-scale operations, it promises a substantial reduction in road traffic, enhanced connectivity across dense urban nodes, and improved daily commutes for thousands of passengers.
