The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has issued revised standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the evacuation of Signature View Apartments in Mukherjee Nagar, which are slated for demolition following a 2022 IIT Delhi report declaring them structurally unsafe. Residents have until July 31, 2025, to vacate, with flats already vacated required to be handed over by May 30. While 111 of the 336 families have relocated, a major point of concern remains: the DDA has yet to clarify when rent compensation will begin, despite multiple SOPs being issued. Site engineers have been appointed to assist residents through the handover process.
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has issued a fresh set of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for residents of Signature View Apartments (SVA) in Mukherjee Nagar, New Delhi, as part of the ongoing process to vacate the premises ahead of their scheduled demolition and reconstruction.
This move comes in the wake of a 2022 report by IIT Delhi which declared the apartment towers structurally unfit for habitation. In response, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena directed the DDA in January 2023 to proceed with their demolition.
As per the updated SOPs, flats that have already been vacated must be officially handed over to DDA by May 30. The final deadline for all remaining families to vacate and surrender their flats has been fixed for July 31. Of the total 336 residential units in the complex, approximately 111 families have already relocated.
The newly issued SOPs clearly outline the steps required for surrendering the flats. The DDA has also assigned site engineers to oversee the handover process and assist the families whenever necessary.
While the procedural aspects have been detailed, one critical issue remains unresolved: the timeline and initiation of rent compensation. The lack of clarity regarding when rent payments will begin has been a recurring concern, as previous SOPs issued in March also failed to specify this crucial detail.
As the DDA moves forward with the evacuation and demolition of Signature View Apartments, clarity on procedural steps offers some relief to residents. However, the continued uncertainty around rent compensation remains a pressing concern that the authorities are yet to address.
