Synopsis

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has collected INR 7.75 crore in property tax collections for the opening month of the current financial year, driven largely by enthusiastic residential taxpayer participation. This development comes during an active rebate window offering substantial discounts to early taxpayers. The MC has also taken corrective steps to address confusion around revised tax rates by issuing updated bills. The civic body's earlier achievements, including a record-breaking INR 52.24 crore in property tax revenue in the previous fiscal year, underscore its increasingly effective revenue mobilisation strategies.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation recorded a significant property tax collection of INR 7.75 crore during the past month, kickstarting the 2025-26 financial year on a robust note. According to municipal officials, this figure includes INR 5.62 crore collected from residential properties and INR 2.13 crore from commercial properties.

The collections were fuelled by the civic body's ongoing two-month rebate initiative, which began earlier this month and will continue until the end of next month. Under this scheme, residential property owners are being offered a 20% rebate, while commercial property owners can avail themselves of a 10% discount, provided they pay their taxes within the stipulated period.

Officials revealed that a total of 14,607 taxpayers had taken advantage of this incentive so far-comprising 13,243 from the residential segment and 1,364 from the commercial segment. The rebate window appears to be a motivating factor behind the strong response, especially as it coincides with the beginning of the fiscal year when many citizens are keen to settle their dues early.

Municipal authorities have also been addressing a wave of public queries stemming from confusion about recently revised property tax rates. The reduction in tax rates by the local government had created uncertainty among taxpayers, prompting a surge in enquiries. To clear the air, the MC began dispatching updated tax bills with recalculated dues to ensure citizens are well-informed and able to comply before the rebate window closes.

In a show of growing efficiency and outreach, the Municipal Corporation had earlier achieved a record-breaking annual property tax collection of INR 52.24 crore in the previous financial year, reflecting a 21% increase over the year before. This impressive performance was largely credited to enhanced taxpayer engagement efforts and a streamlined collection mechanism introduced by the civic administration.

By combining citizen-friendly policies with operational clarity, the MC continues to position itself as a proactive and effective urban revenue authority. The current rebate scheme and its early results suggest a strong start to the fiscal year, reinforcing the civic body's commitment to transparency and financial sustainability.
