The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) plans to build 2,500 new houses in 2025-26 under the Ramai Housing Scheme, which aims to support Scheduled Castes and Neo-Buddhists by providing affordable housing. So far, 5,795 families have benefitted, with INR 112.40 crore spent out of the INR 142.43 crore sanctioned. Under the scheme, families with an annual income of up to INR 3 lakh are eligible for a subsidy of INR 2.5 lakh towards construction. Around 1,500 new beneficiaries were added this year. Ashi Nagar has recorded the highest number of beneficiaries. In January 2024, NMC received about 2,500 new applications.
The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has announced plans to build 2,500 new houses in the financial year 2025-26 under the Ramai Housing Scheme, a program focused on providing homes for members of the Scheduled Castes and Neo-Buddhist communities.
The Ramai Housing Scheme is a government initiative aimed at helping economically weaker families, particularly from Scheduled Castes and Neo-Buddhists, to own a house. As per a government resolution issued in 2017, families living in urban areas with an annual income of up to INR 3 lakh are eligible. They receive a subsidy of INR 2.5 lakh for house construction under the scheme.
Since the launch of the program, the NMC has helped around 5,795 families secure their own homes. So far, the civic body has spent INR 112.40 crore out of the INR 142.43 crore sanctioned for the project.
In the ongoing financial year (2024-25), about 1,500 new families have already been added as beneficiaries of the scheme. The NMC is stepping up efforts to reach more eligible families under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari. The implementation is being carried out mainly through the NMC's slum department.
To increase awareness and enroll more beneficiaries, zone-wise camps were organized between January 1 and January 28, 2024. These camps, led by the municipal commissioner and the commissioner of social welfare, attracted nearly 2,500 applications from members of the targeted communities.
Different areas of Nagpur have seen varied participation in the Ramai Housing Scheme. Ashi Nagar recorded the highest, assisting 1,695 families. Hanuman Nagar followed with 609 families, while Laxmi Nagar and Dharampeth supported 558 and 552 families respectively. Satranjipura helped 513 families, Mangalwari 481, Nehru Nagar 423, Lakadganj 398, Dhantoli 347, and Gandhibagh 219 families.
In 2023-24, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation approved 1,107 new houses under the scheme. By setting a new target of 2,500 homes for 2025-26, NMC aims to continue contributing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's broader vision of 'housing for all.' The authorities are working to expand the scheme's reach and speed up the construction process, ensuring that more underprivileged families in Nagpur can have a home of their own.
