Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath has directed the urban development department to implement a uniform system for municipal service charges across the state. Citing inconsistencies in fees among municipal corporations, councils, and town bodies, he called for a standardised framework to ensure fairness and transparency. Currently, varying slab structures-especially in places like Fatehpur and Budaun-cause confusion and inequality. Officials have been tasked with creating a uniform rate structure to apply statewide. This move aims to streamline urban governance, eliminate arbitrary charges, and provide consistent service delivery for all residents, regardless of location. Implementation preparations are now being prioritised.

Emphasising the urgent need for uniformity, he instructed senior officials to immediately begin drafting an action plan to address inconsistencies in service charges levied by various urban local bodies. Highlighting the disparities currently observed, Yogi stressed that municipal corporations, municipal councils, and town councils (nagar nigams, nagar palikas, and nagar panchayats) must not differ in the fees charged for similar services. The aim, he asserted, is to ensure fairness and consistency so that residents across cities and towns receive the same level of service without facing arbitrary or disproportionate fees.
Additionally, municipal councils in Fatehpur and Budaun were noted to apply different slab structures for various civic services. In smaller towns, the situation is even more uneven, with many town councils adopting arbitrary fee frameworks, leading to confusion and lack of transparency among residents seeking municipal services.
Officials have now been tasked with developing a systematic formula to eliminate these inconsistencies. The goal is to prescribe uniform rates across all urban local bodies, ensuring that applicants, regardless of location, are charged standardised fees for comparable services.
The Chief Minister's directive reflects a significant move towards bringing efficiency, transparency, and fairness in the functioning of urban local bodies throughout Uttar Pradesh. By bridging the gaps in existing practices and enforcing a uniform approach, the government aims to promote a more citizen-friendly urban governance model.
The state's urban development department has been asked to prioritise this reform, ensuring that all preparations for implementing the new standardised structure are completed promptly.
