Synopsis

Kochi is advancing its urban infrastructure with the INR 2,577 crore Phase 2 'Pink Line' metro expansion, adding 11.2 km and 11 stations from JLN Stadium to Infopark via Kakkanad by 2026. Supported by a EUR 175 million loan from France's AFD, the metro aims to improve connectivity to Kochi's tech hubs. The INR 1,137 crore Kochi Water Metro, India's first integrated water transport system, spans 76 km with 78 battery-powered boats across 38 terminals. Meanwhile, DP World's Vallarpadam transshipment terminal saw 17% growth in 2024, now operating at 1.4 million TEU capacity. Together, these projects position Kochi as a model sustainable urban hub.

A major development in Kochi is the expansion of the Kochi Metro. The second phase, known as the 'Pink Line', is a 11.2 km extension from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Infopark via Kakkanad, featuring 11 stations. The project, estimated at INR 2,577 crore, is funded by the Kerala government and international agencies, including a EUR 175 million loan from the French development agency AFD. Construction commenced in July 2024, with completion expected by the end of 2026.

Complementing the metro expansion is the Kochi Water Metro, India's first integrated water transport system. The project involves 78 battery-powered hybrid boats operating on 15 routes with 38 terminals, covering 76 km. The total project cost is INR 1,137 crore, with funding from the German development bank KfW and the Kerala government. The Water Metro aims to serve 150,000 passengers daily by 2035, significantly reducing carbon emissions.

In the maritime sector, the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam, operated by DP World, reported a 17% growth in 2024, handling 840,564 TEUs. The terminal's capacity has been increased to approximately 1.4 million TEUs with the addition of new cranes and expanded yard space.

Collectively, these infrastructure projects signify Kochi's commitment to becoming a modern, sustainable urban center, poised to play a pivotal role in Kerala's growth trajectory.
