Synopsis

Chandigarh residents now have the option to pay their revised property tax at e-Sampark centres using previously received tax bills. The Municipal Corporation has updated its system to reflect the reduced tax rates, allowing payments via debit/credit cards, demand drafts, or at the e-Sampark centres. Taxpayers who pay by May 31 will receive a 20% rebate on residential properties and a 10% rebate on commercial properties. Any excess payments made under previous tax rates will be adjusted in the next financial year.

Chandigarh residents now have the convenience of paying their revised property tax at e-Sampark centres even if they possess the old tax bills. The Municipal Corporation, in collaboration with SPIC under the IT Department, has ensured that the updated tax rates are applied to each property through its unique ID. This update allows property owners to pay taxes without needing the new bill.

Taxpayers can make payments through various methods, including online debit/credit card transactions, demand drafts, or directly at e-Sampark centres. However, cash payments will not be accepted at Municipal Corporation premises, ensuring a more efficient and secure transaction process.

The revised tax rates, which were introduced earlier this week, offer incentives for early payments. Residential property owners who pay by May 31 are eligible for a 20% rebate, while commercial property owners can avail themselves of a 10% rebate. After this deadline, late payments will incur a 25% penalty, in addition to 12% annual interest.

For property owners who made tax payments under the previous, higher rates, the excess amounts will be adjusted in the upcoming financial year's property tax bills. The Municipal Corporation has opted not to issue refunds but instead to make these adjustments to simplify the process and avoid complications for both the administration and the taxpayers.

This system update aims to provide a smoother, more accessible tax payment experience for Chandigarh's property owners while ensuring that those who paid excess taxes under the earlier, higher rates are not penalised.

By enabling payments using old bills and offering rebates for early payments, the Municipal Corporation is encouraging compliance while ensuring fairness for taxpayers. The adjustment of excess payments in the next financial year reflects the administration's commitment to transparency and fairness, making the entire process more straightforward for property owners.
