Synopsis

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has extended the 5% property tax rebate deadline for FY 2025-26 to May 31, 2025, offering relief to property owners facing technical issues and confusion over the new Solid Waste Management (SWM) fee. The rebate was originally available only until April 30, but the BBMP portal's delayed functionality and public requests prompted the extension. Approved by the Urban Development Department under Section 144(8) of the BBMP Act, 2020, the move allows taxpayers paying in full by the new deadline to still claim the rebate. The decision aims to ease taxpayer concerns and improve municipal responsiveness.

In a significant move aimed at providing relief to property owners in Bengaluru, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has extended the deadline for the 5% rebate on property tax payments for the financial year 2025-26 to May 31, 2025. Previously, the rebate was available only to those who paid their full property tax dues by April 30, 2025.

This extension comes in response to numerous requests from property owners who encountered difficulties due to technical glitches on the BBMP property tax portal, which was reportedly inactive until April 5, 2025. Additionally, confusion surrounding the newly introduced Solid Waste Management (SWM) user fee contributed to widespread frustration among taxpayers. These issues led to calls for a one-month extension of the rebate period.

Following a proposal discussed during a meeting, the government approved the extension, allowing all BBMP taxpayers to avail of the 5% discount if they pay their 2025-26 property tax in full by the revised deadline of May 31, 2025. This decision was formally notified earlier this week.

Under Section 144(8) of the BBMP Act, 2020, the BBMP has the authority to recommend an extension of the rebate period to the government through a notification. Based on this provision, the BBMP submitted a proposal seeking government approval for the extension. The Urban Development Department has now issued an official notification approving the revised deadline.

Property owners within BBMP limits who pay their full property tax for 2025-26 by May 31, 2025, will continue to receive the 5% rebate. This extension provides taxpayers with additional time to clear their dues and avail of the discount.

By addressing concerns related to technical issues and fee confusion, the BBMP has provided property owners with an opportunity to benefit from the rebate. This move not only eases the financial burden on taxpayers but also underscores the importance of effective communication and timely interventions in municipal governance.
