Synopsis

The BMC has set November 30, 2025, as the new target to open the Belasis Bridge, aiming to boost east-west connectivity in Mumbai's central districts. After a project review, officials also scheduled the Canara Bridge reopening by June 10, 2025, and the Sion Flyover completion by May 31, 2026. Demolition and underpass construction work at Sion West will begin post-monsoon. Real estate players in Byculla and Mumbai Central expect the Belasis Bridge to ease traffic congestion, enhancing the appeal of ongoing redevelopment projects. The accelerated timelines are part of BMC's broader efforts to decongest critical city routes.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set a new target to open the Belasis Bridge for traffic by November 30, 2025. BMC Additional Commissioner Abhijit Bangar, after reviewing the city's key infrastructure projects, directed the bridges department to accelerate work on several critical connectors, including the Belasis Bridge, Canara Bridge, and Sion Flyover.

Officials said the eastern side of the Sion West foot overbridge (FOB) will be completed by April end, followed by clearance work such as trimming trees to ensure access. Once the FOB is finished, it will be handed over to the civic body, allowing the remaining demolition of the adjoining structure within railway land to commence.

BMC explained that the demolition of the old bridge will free up space for the construction of a public underpass, which will be facilitated by the railways by August 2025. However, given the impending monsoon, full-fledged work on the underpass will only begin by October 1.

The Belasis Bridge project is among several key upgrades aimed at improving east-west connectivity across Mumbai's densely packed central districts. Real estate brokers in the Byculla and Mumbai Central areas noted that once operational, the bridge could ease traffic congestion, benefiting residential and commercial developments planned around these locations.

As Mumbai's real estate market in south-central zones sees a growing number of redevelopment projects, faster completion of pending infrastructure like the Belasis Bridge is seen as critical to sustaining price momentum and ensuring better liveability.

The BMC has also announced parallel timelines for other critical connectors, with the Canara Bridge slated to reopen by June 10, 2025, and the Sion Flyover by May 31, 2026, aligning with the broader push to decongest key arterial routes.
