Shimla will soon host the world's second-largest urban ropeway system, a 13.79 km network aimed at easing traffic and boosting eco-friendly transport. Backed by a INR 1,734.70 crore investment from the Himachal Pradesh government and the New Development Bank, construction will begin in March 2025 and finish within five years. Featuring 13 stations across key city points, the system will initially handle 2,000 passengers per hour, expandable to 6,000 by 2059. Designed as a carbon-neutral project with solar integration, the initiative is expected to create over 20,000 jobs and marks a major step toward sustainable urban development in Shimla.

The ropeway project, with an estimated cost of INR 1,734.70 crore, is a collaborative effort between the Himachal Pradesh government and the New Development Bank (NDB). The state government will contribute 20% of the funding, while the remaining 80% will be financed through a loan from the NDB . Construction is scheduled to commence in March 2025, with completion targeted within five years.
Designed to alleviate the city's chronic traffic issues, the ropeway will feature 13 boarding stations, including key locations such as Taradevi, Judicial Complex, Chakkar, Tutikandi, New ISBT, Railway Station, and Lakkar Bazaar . Initially, the system will have the capacity to transport 2,000 passengers per hour in each direction, with plans to increase this capacity to 6,000 passengers per hour by 2059.
Beyond improving transportation, the project is expected to generate significant employment opportunities, creating approximately 250 direct jobs and over 20,000 indirect jobs in related sectors . Additionally, the ropeway aims to be a carbon-neutral project, incorporating solar panels in gondola cabins and stations to reduce its environmental impact.
This ambitious initiative aligns with the state's broader efforts to enhance infrastructure and promote sustainable development. By integrating modern technology with environmental consciousness, Shimla's urban ropeway project represents a significant step forward in addressing urban challenges while preserving the city's natural beauty.
