Synopsis

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has issued urgent notices to residents of Signature View Apartments in Mukherjee Nagar to vacate their flats, as the 336-unit complex has been deemed structurally unsafe. An e-tender for demolition was floated on March 17, with the process expected to conclude within 120 days of site handover. Although the Delhi High Court mandated evacuation by March 23, many residents remain due to delays in rent compensation. While 111 families have vacated, they await promised assistance. The DDA has pledged compliance with court orders and assured further details on compensation and reconstruction will be shared soon.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has issued a notice to residents of Signature View Apartments in Mukherjee Nagar, urging them to vacate their flats promptly. The complex, comprising 336 flats, has been classified as a "dangerous building" due to structural safety concerns.

Constructed between 2007 and 2010, the 336-flat complex began showing structural issues within a few years of occupancy. A 2022 audit by IIT Delhi declared the buildings unfit for habitation, recommending immediate evacuation and demolition . In response, the DDA issued an e-tender on March 17, 2025, for the demolition of the complex, with the selected agency responsible for dismantling the structures and transporting debris to an approved dumping site .

The Delhi High Court had mandated that all occupants vacate their flats between December 23, 2024, and March 23, 2025. With this deadline now passed, the DDA emphasized the urgency of evacuation to ensure residents' safety and facilitate the demolition and reconstruction process.

Despite the directive, many residents remain in their homes, citing delays in receiving promised rent compensation. According to the Resident Welfare Association (RWA), 111 families have already vacated but have not received the financial assistance assured by the DDA. The DDA has stated its commitment to complying with the court's directive regarding rent assistance, although it plans to appeal certain aspects of the ruling.

The DDA's e-tender outlines that the selected agency will be responsible for dismantling the existing structures and transporting debris to a Municipal Corporation of Delhi-approved dumping site. The demolition process is expected to be completed within 120 days from the date of site handover.

Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of clarity regarding the reconstruction schedule and procedures for claiming the facilitation amount. The DDA has assured that further information will be shared in due course.

The situation underscores the challenges faced in balancing safety concerns with residents' needs for timely compensation and clear communication during redevelopment projects.
