Synopsis

In a decisive move to address Gurugram's mounting construction and demolition (C&D) waste, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) initiated a project earlier this week to clear approximately 600,000 metric tonnes of debris over the next three months. The plan involves hiring a private contractor responsible for transporting the waste to the Basai processing facility. The project, estimated at INR 9 crore, mandates the use of GPS-equipped vehicles and the establishment of a dedicated helpline for complaint resolution within 48 hours. Despite allocating INR 10 crore for C&D waste management in the previous fiscal year, only half was utilized. This year, the budget has been increased to INR 20 crore, reflecting a renewed commitment to effective waste management.

Earlier this week, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) embarked on an ambitious project to eliminate approximately 600,000 metric tonnes of construction and demolition (C&D) waste from the city within a three-month timeframe. This initiative involves engaging a private contractor to manage the collection and transportation of the waste to the Basai processing facility.

The project, with an estimated cost of INR 9 crore, stipulates that the contractor must use GPS-enabled vehicles to ensure transparency and efficiency. Additionally, a dedicated helpline is to be established to address public complaints within 48 hours. Contractors are also required to submit vehicle registration details and fitness certificates before commencing operations.

An MCG official indicated that the tender was floated recently, emphasizing that the request for proposal (RFP) includes conditions to guarantee 100% collection and transportation of C&D waste. The proposal also mandates dust suppression measures during both disposal and transportation phases. Once transported, the waste is to be laid in 450mm thick layers and compacted using roller equipment.

In the previous fiscal year, MCG had allocated INR 10 crore for C&D waste management but utilized only 50% of the funds. For the current fiscal year, the allocation has been increased to INR 20 crore, signaling a stronger commitment to addressing the issue.
