With significant arrears still pending, the civic body is intensifying efforts to recover dues, including issuing notices and considering stricter enforcement actions. This approach underscores the corporation's commitment to improving financial health and ensuring compliance among property owners.

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (CMC) has embarked on a targeted campaign to bolster property tax collections by directly engaging with its top 100 property taxpayers. This initiative, launched earlier this week, involves personalized calls to these taxpayers, urging them to clear any outstanding dues promptly.


This move comes in the wake of the conclusion of a rebate period that offered a 20% discount on residential property taxes and a 10% discount on commercial property taxes. Despite these incentives, a substantial number of property owners have yet to settle their dues, prompting the CMC to adopt more direct measures.

In addition to reaching out to top taxpayers, the CMC has issued notices to approximately 3,500 defaulters, signaling a broader crackdown on tax evasion. Notably, prominent institutions such as Panjab University and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) have been identified as significant defaulters, with dues amounting to INR 23 crore and INR 12.57 crore, respectively.

The civic body has also warned that continued non-compliance may lead to stringent actions, including the sealing of properties. This assertive stance reflects the CMC's determination to enhance revenue collection and ensure fiscal responsibility across the city.

The initiative not only addresses immediate fiscal challenges but also sets a precedent for proactive governance. As the city continues to grow, such measures will be crucial in maintaining financial stability and supporting sustainable urban development.
