Synopsis

McDonald's has chosen Hyderabad as the site for its India headquarters and Global Capability Centre (GCC), following a competitive selection process that saw the city triumph over rivals like Bangalore. This strategic move is expected to create 2,000 jobs in its initial phase. The American fast-food giant plans to leverage Telangana's skilled workforce and infrastructure while expanding its local restaurant network. The Telangana government is also looking to strengthen this partnership by offering agricultural produce sourcing and workforce training via state-backed skilling programs, further anchoring McDonald's growing footprint in the region.

McDonald's, in collaboration with its Indian business partner, is set to strengthen its presence in Telangana, where it currently operates 38 outlets. The brand has outlined plans to add three to four new restaurants each year, with a focus on expanding into tier-two and tier-three towns across the state.

In a significant development earlier this week, the American multinational fast-food chain confirmed it will establish its India headquarters and a Global Capability Centre (GCC) in Hyderabad. The announcement followed a meeting between McDonald's Chairman & CEO Chris Kempczinski and Telangana Chief Minister Shri A. Revanth Reddy.

As per the Chief Minister's office, the India office is expected to commence operations with an initial workforce of 2,000 employees. Telangana emerged as the preferred destination after a highly competitive process involving other states. The Chief Minister was personally involved in securing the deal, ensuring that Telangana provided the most competitive proposition to McDonald's.

Kempczinski explained that Hyderabad was chosen over other contenders like Bangalore due to its abundant talent pool, superior infrastructure, and high quality of life. He added that the GCC will be pivotal in training personnel for McDonald's operations across India and overseas, positioning Telangana as a critical skilling hub for the company.

The Chief Minister highlighted the state's dedicated skilling initiatives undertaken over the past 15 months and encouraged McDonald's to utilize the facilities at Young India Skills University. This would help develop a ready talent pool not only for the new global office but also for McDonald's restaurant operations nationwide.

Further strengthening the collaboration, the Chief Minister proposed that McDonald's source its agricultural produce locally, promising a boost to Telangana's farming sector and potentially increasing farmers' incomes.

During the meeting, Kempczinski also discussed McDonald's community development programs, assuring the Chief Minister that the company intends to expand its social initiatives in Telangana, in close coordination with the state government.

Kempczinski was accompanied by senior executives, including Skye Anderson, President of Global Business Services, Jon Banner, Chief Global Impact Officer, and Deshant Kaila, Head of GBS India.

McDonald's expansion plans in Telangana align with the state's ambitions to position Hyderabad as a major business and talent hub, while also driving rural economic growth through partnerships with local communities.
