Last Updated : 25th Mar, 2025
Synopsis

The Bhubaneswar metro rail project may soon extend to Cuttack, rather than ending at Trishulia, to ensure seamless connectivity between the twin cities. Housing and Urban Development Minister Shri Krushna Chandra Mohapatra emphasized the need for this extension, with a technical team currently reviewing route and design adjustments. A possible bridge over the Kathajodi River is being considered. While depot construction and precasting continue, the extension could push the project completion beyond December 2027. Once operational, commuters will travel between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack in 30 minutes, significantly improving urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion in the region.

The Bhubaneswar metro rail corridor may extend to Cuttack, ensuring seamless connectivity between the twin cities instead of terminating at Trishulia. Housing and Urban Development Minister Shri Krushna Chandra Mohapatra highlighted the necessity of this extension, stating that halting the metro on the outskirts of Cuttack would be impractical. A high-level technical team is actively assessing potential route modifications and design adjustments. While the project remains on track, authorities are reconsidering certain aspects to improve operations and enhance accessibility.

Officials confirmed that the modification plan will not affect ongoing depot construction and precasting activities. According to sources, an additional detailed project report (DPR) may propose constructing a bridge over the Kathajodi River if the metro extends through Trishulia into Cuttack. Given Cuttack's dense urban landscape and congested internal roads, selecting suitable metro stoppages presents a challenge. Authorities are considering routing the metro through prominent locations, similar to Bhubaneswar's approach, to maximize convenience for commuters and ensure efficient operations.

The original plan focused on easing traffic congestion within Bhubaneswar. However, if the Cuttack extension takes shape, the completion deadline may extend beyond December 2027. Uncertainty remains regarding the project's phased execution-whether Bhubaneswar's metro segment will commence first, followed by Cuttack's inclusion in a subsequent phase. Once operational, the metro will significantly reduce travel time between the twin cities. Daily commuters will reach central Cuttack or Bhubaneswar within 30 minutes, while the journey to the railway station will take approximately 35 minutes and to the airport, 45 minutes.

According to Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the metro will cover the Trishulia-to-airport stretch in 45 minutes. However, authorities have yet to confirm the precise train intervals or the estimated travel duration within Cuttack. Following successful soil testing, BMRCL initiated precasting workshops and the construction of a coach maintenance depot. The facility manufactures precast components for metro pillars and columns, expediting the project's implementation. The elevated metro corridor spans 26 kilometers and features 20 stations, ensuring enhanced urban mobility and improved public transportation infrastructure.

The proposed extension of the Bhubaneswar metro to Cuttack reflects a strategic move toward strengthening urban connectivity and enhancing commuter convenience. While the expansion may extend the project timeline, it promises long-term benefits by reducing travel time and improving public transportation infrastructure between the twin cities.
