Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), recognised as India's first operational smart city and International Financial Services Centre (IFSC), has been awarded the prestigious ISO 14001:2015 certification for its Environmental Management System (EMS). Conferred by Bureau Veritas, a globally accredited certification body, this achievement underscores GIFT City's unwavering dedication to sustainable urban development and environmental stewardship.
The ISO 14001:2015 certification is an internationally recognised standard that sets out the criteria for effective environmental management systems. It serves as a benchmark for organisations integrating sustainable practices into their operations. By securing this certification, GIFT City has demonstrated a structured and comprehensive approach to minimising its environmental footprint across key areas such as planning, construction, operations, and maintenance.
Commenting on this milestone, Mr Tapan Ray, Managing Director and Group Chief Executive Officer of GIFT City, remarked that the certification highlights the city's commitment to building a future-ready financial and technology hub with sustainability at its core. He further stated that by embedding global environmental standards into its operations, GIFT City is not only ensuring regulatory compliance but also fostering responsible growth aligned with international environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles.
GIFT City's emphasis on sustainability is reflected in its pioneering infrastructure initiatives. These include India's first District Cooling System, an Automated Waste Collection System, and an extensive underground Utility Tunnel network. Such innovations set new benchmarks in sustainable urban development, allowing the city to balance rapid business expansion with environmental responsibility.
GIFT City has already gained significant traction as a preferred destination for global financial institutions, fintech companies, and multinational corporations. The newly acquired ISO 14001 certification is expected to further enhance investor confidence, attract businesses with a strong focus on environmental responsibility, and strengthen GIFT City's positioning as a world-class financial centre.
This achievement also aligns with the Indian government's growing emphasis on green infrastructure and sustainable urbanisation. GIFT City's certification serves as a testament to the nation's broader commitment to integrating ESG principles into its business and urban development ecosystems. As India's first smart city and IFSC, GIFT City continues to lead by example, setting a global benchmark for sustainable financial hubs.
