Synopsis

The Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) is nearing the completion of two key features: a 7.5-kilometre-long promenade and a 550-metre vehicular underpass, both expected to open ahead of this year's monsoon. Civic authorities confirmed that the INR 13,000-crore project, extending from Marine Drive to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL), is in its final stages. The promenade, inspired by Hong Kong's design, will offer jogging tracks, seating areas, and lush green spaces. Meanwhile, the vehicular underpass will connect Dadar and Prabhadevi to the coastal road, easing traffic congestion and offering quicker access to western suburbs and southern Mumbai.

Two new features of the Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP)-a 7.5-kilometre promenade and a vehicular underpass-are scheduled to be opened to the public ahead of the upcoming monsoon season, according to civic authorities. A 550-metre-long vehicular underpass (VuP) has been constructed to serve motorists travelling from Dadar and Prabhadevi towards the coastal road and will be the only VuP incorporated within the 10.58-kilometre stretch of the project.

Vehicles from the Sewri-Worli connector will be able to utilise this underpass, providing a direct route either to the western suburbs or southern Mumbai, thereby reducing overall travel time. The underpass runs beneath Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road, linking J K Kapur Chowk to the coastal road through the vehicular interchange at Bindoo Madhav Thackeray Chowk on Worli Sea Face. Once inside the underpass, motorists will have the option to head towards Bandra or continue on to Marine Drive and Nariman Point.

Currently, the 10.58-kilometre-long high-speed corridor is already facilitating vehicular movement between Marine Drive and the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL). Officials stated that the landscaping work is in its final stages and is expected to be completed within the next two months.

The INR 13,000-crore coastal road project has been developed through the reclamation of 111 hectares from the Arabian Sea, with 70 hectares allocated for public open spaces and promenades. A civic official explained that the promenade would extend between Priyadarshini Park (PDP) and Worli, featuring jogging tracks, seating areas, and green zones. The official mentioned that the landscaping efforts are underway, with a completion target set for the end of May.

Running parallel to the shoreline along the southbound carriageway, the promenade will have a width of 20 metres. It has been designed with tactile paving to ensure accessibility for persons with disabilities. The design concept draws inspiration from Hong Kong, incorporating palm trees and indigenous shrubs. Saplings for the project have been sourced from nurseries across India, including Delhi, Gujarat, Pune, and Kolkata.

The official remarked that once the promenade opens, visitors would be able to enjoy closer views of the Arabian Sea. 20 pedestrian underpasses (PuPs) are under construction to facilitate access from the landside to the promenade.

The promenade itself will run alongside the southbound carriageway of the coastal road, parallel to the shoreline. As per officials, it will be designed with tactile paving and will span a width of 20 metres to accommodate those with disabilities. Tata Sons Limited, utilising its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds, is in the process of beautifying the central median along a 4.35-kilometre stretch between Priyadarshini Park and Worli.

Additionally, five companies have expressed interest in developing 70 hectares of open space along the coastal road, with CSR investments estimated at INR 400 crore. A senior civic official stated that reviews of these firms are ongoing, following which a final decision would be made.

In addition to the promenade, traffic medians measuring 11 metres wide are being converted into green spaces, as stated by the official.

Nearly 70 hectares of open space are being added, with approximately 70% designated as green cover and the remaining 30% paved to include walkways, cycling tracks, and the promenade. The facilities will be accessible via nine main entry points, including Setalvad Lane, Tata Garden, Mahalaxmi, Lotus Jetty, Haji Ali Juice Centre, Atria Mall, and Madraswadi in Worli.
