Tripura is constructing its first 14-story government office in Gurkhabasti, Agartala, with earthquake-resistant technology and eco-friendly design. Located in Seismic Zone 5, it will use a pendulum-based base isolator to withstand earthquakes up to 8.8 magnitude. Designed with IIT Mumbai's support, it has earned a four-star green building rating. The INR 133.89 crore project, led by Tripura's PWD and EPI, will house all directorate offices under one roof, improving efficiency. Expected to be completed by December 2026, it is Northeast India's first base-isolated building, enhancing governance, boosting service delivery, and marking a step toward modern, sustainable infrastructure.
Tripura is building its first 14-story government office in Gurkhabasti, Agartala. It will be one of the few in India with special earthquake protection and eco-friendly design. Tripura falls under Seismic Zone 5, which means it is highly prone to earthquakes. To address this, the new building will feature a pendulum-based base isolator, a technology that allows the structure to move safely during earthquakes of up to 8.8 magnitude. The isolator system was designed and tested in the United States, with technical support from IIT Mumbai.
Additionally, the building has received a four-star rating for green building safety as stated by Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Public Works Department. According to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, the primary goal of the project is to bring all directorate offices of the Tripura government under one roof. Currently, these offices are spread across multiple locations, making official work time-consuming and inconvenient for both officials and the public. Once completed, the new complex will improve efficiency and make government services more accessible.
The INR 133.89 crore project is being developed by the Public Works Department (PWD), Government of Tripura, and executed by Engineering Projects (India) Ltd. (EPI). The building will cover an area of 20,833 square meters, providing ample space for government offices and services.
Construction began after the foundation stone was laid in January 2023. The foundation work and installation of the seismic isolators have been completed, and the building is expected to be fully operational by December 2026.
This will be Northeast India's first building to feature base isolation technology, a system found in only a few buildings across India, mainly in major cities like Delhi. The technology, provided by Earthquake Protection System (EPS), California, will reduce seismic impact by allowing the building to absorb shocks and move safely during earthquakes.
Once completed, the high-rise administrative hub will make governance more streamlined, improving service delivery for citizens and creating a modern, efficient work environment for government officials. The project marks a significant step in Tripura's urban development, demonstrating its commitment to building resilient and sustainable infrastructure for the future.
