Synopsis

Rajahmundry, or Rajamahendravaram, is undergoing a major transformation with over INR 300 crore in infrastructure upgrades led by the Godavari Urban Development Authority (GUDA) and the Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation. Key projects include beautification of Kambala Tank, development of the Godavari riverfront, new parks under AMRUT, and INR 75 crore worth of civic works ahead of the 2027 Pushkaralu festival. Housing and water supply projects under PMAY and APMDP, and plans for a city ring road and tourism development, aim to position Rajahmundry as a culturally vibrant and future-ready city, integrating heritage preservation with modern urban planning.

Rajahmundry, officially known as Rajamahendravaram, is one of the most culturally significant cities in Andhra Pradesh. Located on the banks of the Godavari River, it is not only a major historical and spiritual center but also emerging as a key focus for urban infrastructure development. The Godavari Urban Development Authority (GUDA), established in November 2016 under the Andhra Pradesh Metropolitan Region and Urban Development Authority Act, 2016, plays a central role in planning and overseeing the city's growth. Initially headquartered in Kakinada, GUDA currently covers nearly 4,388 square kilometers, encompassing 598 villages in 53 mandals. Its goal is to guide systematic, long-term urban growth in both core and peripheral areas of Rajahmundry and surrounding regions.

One of the major initiatives under GUDA's umbrella is the beautification and development of the Kambala Tank. With an approved budget of INR 6.05 crore, this project aims to transform the existing water body into a clean, green urban recreational space. In addition, Aryapuram Park is being upgraded under the AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme with a budget of INR 1.37 crore. These projects are part of a broader effort to introduce and maintain more open and recreational spaces in the city, which is crucial in the face of rapid urbanisation.

Another highlight in Rajahmundry's infrastructure roadmap is the development of the Godavari Riverfront, stretching from Bobbillanka to Vemagiri. This riverfront project not only aims to enhance tourism but also promote economic activity along the river. It will include walkways, green belts, seating areas, and lighting, making it an attractive destination for both residents and visitors. Rajahmundry's riverfront has long been considered a key identity of the city, and efforts are now underway to revitalise it through planned interventions.

The Rajahmundry Municipal Corporation (RMC), working alongside GUDA, has also initiated infrastructure development works worth INR 75 crore. These include improvements in road networks, street lighting, drainage systems, and development of new parks. With Rajahmundry set to host the next Godavari Pushkaralu festival in 2027, the city administration is fast-tracking multiple civic upgrades to prepare for the influx of visitors.

On the transportation front, the Godavari Fourth Bridge, completed in 2015 at a cost of INR 800 crore, stands as a major engineering achievement. Connecting Kovvur and Rajahmundry, the 5.06 km bridge has significantly improved interstate connectivity and reduced the travel distance between Chennai and Kolkata by nearly 150 km. This bridge has not only decongested older routes but also supported the growth of logistics and trade in the region.

Housing and water infrastructure projects are also being implemented to support the growing urban population. Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), 912 affordable housing units are being constructed at a cost of INR 27.36 crore. Additionally, the Andhra Pradesh Municipal Development Project (APMDP) has undertaken the replacement of old pipelines with HDPE pipes, alongside the construction of filtration plants and Elevated Level Service Reservoirs (ELSRs), with a combined investment of INR 200 crore to ensure improved water supply and sanitation services.

As part of its long-term vision, GUDA has plans to develop a ring road around Rajahmundry to ease urban traffic. Furthermore, the city's tourism potential is being explored with multiple initiatives focusing on the heritage sites, river cruises, and temples that draw visitors year-round. The aim is to integrate cultural preservation with urban growth. In summary, Rajahmundry's infrastructure growth story is one of heritage meeting modernity.
