The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has set a new benchmark in infrastructure development, winning two prestigious national awards at the Build India Infra Awards 2025, which took place in New Delhi. These awards were presented to MMRDA's Deputy Chief Minister and Chairman, Shri Eknath Shinde, during the 159th Authority Meeting, with the presence of Minister of State for Urban Development, Smt. Madhuri Misal, and Metropolitan Commissioner, Dr Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS.

The Surya Regional Water Supply Scheme was awarded the Impact Award in the Water Sector, while Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 received the Impact Award in the Urban Transport Sector. These awards recognise the transformative impact of both projects in addressing critical public infrastructure needs and enhancing the urban fabric of Mumbai.

The awards were presented by Mr. Amitabh Kant, India's G20 Sherpa and former CEO of NITI Aayog, at a ceremony supported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and the Ministry of Civil Aviation. The event was attended by industry leaders, policymakers, and infrastructure experts.

The Surya Regional Water Supply Scheme, designed to supply 403 million litres per day (MLD) of clean water to approximately 30 lakh residents, has been celebrated for its far-reaching impact on public health, environmental sustainability, and economic development in the western suburbs of Mumbai. This vital project tackles the persistent water scarcity issue in the region and ensures that the water supplied meets stringent WHO and IS 10500 standards. Additionally, it incorporates gravity-based flow systems to reduce energy consumption and advanced reactor clarifier technology, maximising space in constrained environments. A 4.6 km tunnel was carefully constructed under the Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary to protect local biodiversity, while other tunnel alignments near Vasai Creek and Kaman Creek were designed to prevent any damage to the mangroves and surrounding ecosystems. The project has been implemented primarily on government-owned land, ensuring quicker execution and lower capital expenditure.

On the transport front, Mumbai Metro Lines 2A and 7 have made a remarkable impact on urban mobility in the city. The two lines, which together span 35 km and consist of 30 strategically placed stations, have significantly improved connectivity across Mumbai. Serving over 16.9 crore commuters so far, the metro lines have been designed to integrate smoothly with other metro and rail systems, providing a seamless travel experience. Metro Line 2A, running from Dahisar East to D.N. Nagar connects key areas such as Borivali, Kandivali, Malad, and Andheri, while Metro Line 7, which runs from Andheri East to Dahisar East, connects important areas along the Western Express Highway. Both lines have earned recognition for their high ridership, with the highest recorded daily ridership reaching 292,575 passengers. The metro system employs state-of-the-art signalling technology and has earned Platinum Ratings under the IGBC Green Building Certification. By 2031, both lines are expected to serve 12.7 lakh daily commuters, easing traffic congestion and reducing reliance on the overburdened suburban railway network.

Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis expressed his delight at these awards, emphasising that they reaffirm Maharashtra's leadership in infrastructure development and its commitment to addressing vital needs such as safe drinking water and world-class public transport. Deputy Chief Minister Shri Eknath Shinde reiterated that these awards highlight the government's dedication to improving the lives of citizens through thoughtful, inclusive development. Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, Metropolitan Commissioner, reflected on the pride felt by the MMRDA team, noting that the recognition celebrates not just infrastructure but also the positive impact on the lives of Mumbai's residents.

The Build India Infra Awards recognise excellence, innovation, and sustainability in the infrastructure sector. The distinguished jury that evaluated the projects was chaired by Mr. Amitabh Kant and included industry experts from various fields.
