Hosting 170 certified green projects-150 rated gold-the city showcases leadership in sustainable urban planning, integrating energy-efficient designs, renewable energy, and smart infrastructure. Indore, along with Bhopal and Ujjain, has adopted efficient waste, water, and green mobility systems. Challenges include high investment costs and limited professional training. IGBC's Indore Chapter has suggested incentives and partnerships with CREDAI to promote sustainable construction. Nationally, IGBC has 13.26 billion sq ft of green building footprints across 15,500 projects.
Indore, recognized as the cleanest city in the country, also leads in green building footprints and smart urban infrastructure within Madhya Pradesh, surpassing Bhopal and Ujjain, as reported by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC). As a part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), IGBC serves as a premier certification authority for sustainable development.
Madhya Pradesh has witnessed the development of approximately 500.4 million square feet of eco-friendly spaces, with Indore alone accounting for 478.3 million square feet. These sustainable projects span residential, commercial, industrial, and data centre developments, reinforcing the city's commitment to environmentally responsible urban expansion. The surge in green initiatives reflects a growing emphasis on sustainable infrastructure across the state.
Indore continues to advance in green building development and the pursuit of net-zero energy goals. The city's urban planning integrates energy-efficient designs, sustainable materials, and renewable energy sources. This approach aligns with broader efforts to enhance sustainability in construction and infrastructure, according to Kushagra Agrawal, Co-Chair of IGBC Indore Chapter.
The city currently hosts around 170 certified green building projects, of which 150 have achieved gold ratings. These projects span various sectors, including residential, commercial, industrial, and educational institutions, demonstrating Indore's leadership in sustainable development. An increasing focus on green buildings, net-zero energy projects, and smart urban infrastructure has reshaped urban planning in Indore, Bhopal, and Ujjain.
These cities have adopted efficient waste and water management systems, green mobility solutions, and renewable energy initiatives, further driving sustainable progress. Despite the momentum in green development, industry experts highlight challenges such as high investment costs and limited professional training. Addressing these obstacles requires collaboration among builders, architects, policymakers, and technology experts to accelerate sustainable construction efforts.
The IGBC Indore Chapter has proposed incentives and partnerships with the Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association (CREDAI) to promote green buildings in residential and commercial sectors. Nationally, IGBC has recorded 13.26 billion square feet of registered green building footprints, with over 15,500 projects adopting its 32 rating systems, affirming the expanding impact of sustainable development practices across India.
