With rapid urbanization, 18 new municipalities and 75 gram panchayats are being added.
Telangana's IT and Industries Minister, D. Sridhar Babu, announced the formulation of three new master plans for the Hyderabad metropolitan region as part of the Mega Master Plan 2050. These include a comprehensive mobility plan, economic development strategy, and blue-green infrastructure development plan. The decision comes as the existing five master plans are nearing their expiration, necessitating updated frameworks to guide the city's future growth. To ensure high-quality planning, the government has engaged globally recognized consultancy firms to assist in the process.
During a budget discussion in the Assembly for the Municipal Administration & Urban Development (MA&UD), Industries, and IT departments for the 2025-26 fiscal year, Sridhar Babu emphasized the government's vision to position Hyderabad as a benchmark for sustainable development over the next 10 to 15 years. This ambitious goal will be achieved through a combination of internal financial resources, institutional loans, and central government support. Several critical urban infrastructure projects will be prioritized, including metro rail expansion, rejuvenation of the Musi River, improved drinking water supply, and the establishment of an underground drainage network. These initiatives will not be limited to Hyderabad but will extend to other municipal corporations and major urban areas across the state.
With rapid urbanization reshaping Telangana's demographic landscape, 49.4% of the state's population now resides in urban areas. The growing demand for well-planned urban spaces has led to the formation of 18 new municipalities and the integration of 75 gram panchayats into urban local bodies. This expansion highlights the need for modernized planning and infrastructure to accommodate the increasing population and economic activity in urban centers.
The announcement of the Mega Master Plan 2050 underscores the government's commitment to structured urban growth, environmental sustainability, and improved quality of life for residents. The emphasis on long-term, well-integrated development reflects a proactive approach to addressing Hyderabad's infrastructural challenges while fostering economic growth. As planning efforts progress, further details on funding, implementation timelines, and public engagement strategies are expected. The government remains focused on making Hyderabad a global urban model through strategic investments and policy reforms aimed at long-term prosperity.
