Bengaluru is moving ahead with plans for a second international airport to meet its rising air traffic. The Airports Authority of India will conduct a feasibility study from April 7-9, 2025, on three shortlisted locations: two near Kanakapura Road and one near Magadi-Nelamangala. With KIA projected to reach 92 million passengers by 2033, the study-funded by INR 1.21 crore from KSIIDC-will assess technical and environmental viability. The move anticipates the end of a 150-km exclusivity clause by 2033. Like Mumbai's Navi Mumbai airport and Delhi's Jewar airport, Bengaluru aims to expand capacity in time for its future growth.
Bengaluru is advancing plans for a second international airport to accommodate its growing air traffic. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) will conduct a feasibility study from April 7 to 9, 2025, focusing on three shortlisted locations: two near Chudahalli and Somanahalli on Kanakapura Road in Bengaluru Urban district, and one near Magadi-Nelamangala in Ramanagara district.
The Karnataka State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation (KSIIDC), the project's nodal agency, has allocated INR 1.21 crore for this assessment. The study will evaluate technical and environmental factors, including revenue maps, a decade of meteorological data, geographic assessments, and operational feasibility reports.
The need for a second airport arises from the increasing passenger traffic at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA). In the fiscal year 2022-23, KIA handled approximately 40 million passengers, a 25% increase from the previous year. Projections indicate that by 2032-33, passenger traffic could reach 92 million, nearing the airport's maximum capacity.
Currently, an agreement restricts the construction of another airport within a 150-kilometer radius of KIA until 2033. With this condition nearing expiration, the state government aims to expedite planning and approvals to have the new airport operational by that time.
The proposed sites' proximity to Bengaluru's industrial and IT hubs is a strategic advantage. For example, the locations near Kanakapura Road are closer to Electronic City, a major IT corridor, potentially reducing travel time for professionals and boosting economic activities in the region.
This initiative mirrors developments in other Indian cities. For instance, Mumbai is planning a second airport in Navi Mumbai to alleviate congestion at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Similarly, Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport's expansion includes the upcoming Jewar Airport in Noida to handle the National Capital Region's growing air traffic.
