The expressway will also integrate with the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, Gorakhpur Link Expressway, and Ganga Expressway, reinforcing Uttar Pradesh's position as a key logistics hub.
The Purvanchal Expressway stands as a monumental infrastructure project in Uttar Pradesh, India, designed to bridge the gap between the state's eastern regions and its capital, Lucknow. Spanning approximately 340.8 kilometers, this six-lane, access-controlled expressway is poised to revolutionize transportation, stimulate economic growth, and significantly impact the real estate sector in the region.
The inception of the Purvanchal Expressway dates back to 2015 when the then Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav, proposed the Lucknow-Azamgarh-Ballia Expressway. However, it was in 2018 that the project gained substantial momentum under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who rebranded it as the Purvanchal Expressway. The expressway is strategically designed to connect key districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Lucknow, Barabanki, Amethi, Sultanpur, Ayodhya, Ambedkar Nagar, Azamgarh, Mau, and Ghazipur, thereby enhancing connectivity and fostering regional development.
The Purvanchal Expressway commences at Village Chand Sarai on the Lucknow-Sultanpur Road (NH-731) in the Lucknow district and extends to near Village Haidaria on National Highway No. 19, approximately 18 kilometers before the Uttar Pradesh-Bihar border in the Ghazipur district. The expressway is designed to be a six-lane, access-controlled corridor, with provisions for future expansion to eight lanes to accommodate increasing traffic demands.
The total financial outlay for the Purvanchal Expressway is estimated at INR 22,497 crore. This budget encompasses various components, including land acquisition costs of INR 7,380 crore, civil construction expenses amounting to INR 12,562 crore, and other associated costs totaling INR 2,555 crore. The financing of the project is structured through a combination of state government grants and loans from a consortium of banks, with the latter contributing INR 11,197 crore.
The expressway's construction involves several critical infrastructure elements to ensure safety and efficiency. These include 18 flyovers, 7 railway overbridges, 7 major bridges, 118 short bridges, 13 interchanges (6 of which are equipped with toll plazas), 5 ramp plazas, 271 underpasses, and 503 culverts. The project is divided into eight packages, awarded to five different contractors, including PNC Infratech Limited, Gayatri Projects, GR Infra, Oriental Structural Engineering, and Apco Infra.
As of early 2025, the Purvanchal Expressway is nearing completion, with substantial portions already operational. The expressway is expected to be fully functional by mid-2025, with ongoing work focusing on the completion of various underpasses, bridges, and toll plazas. The project has faced challenges, including land acquisition issues and logistical hurdles, but remains on track to meet its completion timeline.
The Purvanchal Expressway is anticipated to be a significant driver of economic development in eastern Uttar Pradesh. By enhancing connectivity between the state's capital and its eastern districts, the expressway is expected to stimulate industrial growth, improve logistics, and attract investment. The improved infrastructure is likely to lead to increased demand for residential, commercial, and industrial real estate along the expressway's route. Towns such as Sultanpur, Barabanki, and Azamgarh are already witnessing a rise in land prices and real estate developments, as developers and investors capitalize on the enhanced connectivity and accessibility.

Plans are underway to link the expressway with other major highways, such as the Agra-Lucknow Expressway, to further enhance connectivity between Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states. The Uttar Pradesh government has allocated a budget of INR 500 crore for this road project, aiming to improve access between the national capital, Delhi, and the eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh.
Additionally, the expressway's integration with the Gorakhpur Link Expressway and the Ganga Expressway is expected to position Uttar Pradesh as a state with one of the largest expressway networks in India, with a total length of 1,788 kilometers upon completion.
