The Rajasthan government has allocated INR 12,000 crore for Jaipur Metro Line 2, marking a milestone in the city's public transport expansion. The new line will connect Sitapura to Ambabari and extend to Vidhyadhar Nagar, improving accessibility. Managed by the newly formed Rajasthan Metro Railway Corporation (RMRC), the project signals a shift from the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) to metro expansion. Alongside, INR 250 crore is earmarked for infrastructure projects, including flyovers, elevated roads, and green spaces. With a focus on sustainable urban mobility, the metro initiative aims to enhance connectivity, ease congestion, and drive economic growth in Jaipur.
The Rajasthan government has announced a significant allocation of INR 12,000 crore for the construction of Jaipur Metro Line 2, marking a pivotal moment for the city's public transport system. This funding is the first of its kind since the establishment of the Jaipur Metro Railway Corporation (JMRC) 15 years ago. Finance Minister Diya Kumari revealed that the project will be managed by the newly formed Rajasthan Metro Railway Corporation (RMRC), a joint venture between the state and central governments. This shift in management aims to streamline operations and improve coordination for the metro project. In a related development, the government has decided to withdraw the Bus Rapid Transport System (BRTS) project in Jaipur, indicating a strategic pivot towards expanding the metro network instead.
The planning for Metro Line 2 has been underway, with the JMRC preparing detailed project reports (DPRs) for both the Sitapura to Ambabari stretch and the Ambabari to Vidhyadhar Nagar extension. Officials have indicated that the DPRs are nearly complete, pending state government approval to move forward with construction. This approval is crucial for meeting the growing transportation needs of Jaipur's expanding population.
In addition to the metro project, the Finance Minister announced various developmental initiatives worth INR 250 crore for Jaipur. These projects include the construction of key infrastructure such as flyovers and elevated roads at critical intersections, which aim to ease traffic congestion in the city. Notable projects include an elevated road from Apex Circle to Jagatpura Balaji Tiraha and another from Jhotwara ROB to Khatipura ROB.
The government is also focusing on enhancing public spaces, with plans to develop Swarn Jayanti Park in Vidhyadhar Nagar into an "Oxygen Zone," promoting greenery and recreational spaces for residents. Furthermore, three residential projects are set to be launched in Pratap Nagar, Indira Gandhi Nagar, and Mansarovar, addressing the housing demands in these growing neighborhoods.
The decision to prioritize the metro over the BRTS reflects a broader trend in urban planning, where cities are increasingly investing in rail-based transit systems to meet the challenges of urban mobility. With the Jaipur Metro Line 2 expected to significantly improve connectivity, it is anticipated that this project will not only benefit daily commuters but also stimulate economic growth in the region.
